Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

BJP legislator Prasanta Phukan will move the returning officer demanding a confirmation that his voting in the ballot paper was cancelled.Stunned by the criticism inside and outside the party for his alleged negligence, Phukan told reporters on Friday that he would move the returning officer seeking a confirmation.His ballot was believed to have been cancelled for showing it to the agents and observers of all political parties in the absence of his own party agents and observer after casting his vote.

Tea garden official kidnapped

Sensation prevails in Titabor after a senior tea garden manager was kidnaped at gunpoint on Friday.The incident took place at the Lakhimijan Tea Garden where armed miscreants took away the manager of the tea garden while he was disbursing salaries to the workers in the afternoon.Policemen arrived on the spot and an intensified operation is in progress to trace out the tea garden manager.      

Majarbhuyan expelled

Stunned by the absence of Ataur Rahman Majarbhuyan in the Rajya Sabha polls, AIUDF has suspended its legislator who is on a visit to Saudi Arabia.The decision was taken after the party legislators met at the Assam Assembly complex on Friday.According to information, the party leadership has decided legal action against the legislator for ignoring the party whip in the Rajya Sabha.Despite assurance, Majarbhuyan has failed to cast his vote on Friday citing his visit to Saudi Arabia.

Hazarika’s effigy burnt

Asom Yuva Parishad activists burnt the effigy of Padma Hazarika alleging his intentional mistake in the voting exercise in the Rajya Sabha polls on Friday.Several AYP activists thronged the AGP headquarters in the evening after the announcement of the poll results. Before that it was confirmed that the ballot paper was cancelled.Some other party activities shouted slogans demanding expulsion of the Sotea MLA alleging his intentional mistake in the ballot paper.

No politics further: Hussain

Opposition consensus candidate Haidor Hussain said that he would further refrain from active political party.After his defeat in the Rajya Sabha polls on Friday, he told reporters in Dispur that his defeat was on the expected line in view of the gradual erosion of unity among the Opposition parties.But he said he agreed to give his consent to the proposal in view of overwhelming support from across the state. He had to remain satisfied with only 26 votes.

AGP suspends Hazarika

The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad has suspended Padma Hazarika for 6 years alleging his intentional mistake in the voting in the Rajya Sabha polls.The decision was taken at the party’s steering committee meeting after the announcement of the poll results.Senior party leaders agreed that the mistake was intentional which was why, his vote was cancelled giving a big blow to the prospect of the Opposition consensus candidate Haidor Hussain.  

BJP votes found intact!

Amid controversy over Prasanta Phukan’s vote, BJP leadership has claimed that not even a single vote of the party legislators have been found invalid.According state unit president Sarbananda Sonowal, all BJP votes were valid and that the question of secret understanding does not arise.Phukan also claimed to have done nothing wrong while he was casting his vote favouring the Opposition consensus vote in the Rajya Sabha polls on Friday.

I am happy: Gogoi

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that he was the happiest of all in the Congress to have ensured the victory of the two ruling party candidates apart from the BPF candidate in the Rajya Sabha polls.Talking to reporters after the announcement of the poll results in Dispur, Gogoi criticized the Opposition unity saying that an unholy alliance does not last long.
