Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

Majarbhuyan blames Ajmal

Caught in a barrage of criticism over his absence from the Rajya Sabha polls, AIUDF legislator Ataur Rahman Majarbhuyan blames it all on the party president Badaruddin Ajmal Seth for it.Talking to reporters immediately after landing at the Silchar Airport on Sunday, he said that it was Ajmal who forced him to shy away from the exercise.According to him, Ajmal assured him of initiatives to manage any situation in his absence. Budget session begins

Assam Assembly begins its budget session on Monday. The five day long session begins at 9 in the morning with Governor JB Patnaik’s address.Then chief minister Tarun Gogoi, who holds the finance portfolio will table the vote on account for four months in lieu  of a full fledged budget in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.The government will be able to run the proceedings smoothly because of the disunity among the Opposition parties in the wake of the Rajya Sabha polls.   

AIUDF begins probe

The All India United Democratic Front is probing into the allegations of helping Congress and BPF candidates in the recent Rajya Sabha polls.Senior AIUDF leaders told Assam Times that the party leadership would take action against the guilty legislators.The probe is in progress acting on the allegations in media against Gopinath Das, Aminul Islam, Sher Shah Alom.      

BJP orders voting scam probe

BJP state president Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday instituted probe into the voting controversy in the Rajya Sabha polls.Headed by Mison Ranjan Das, the committee would closely probe the allegations that a BJP legislator intentionally got his ballot cancelled to help Congress and BPF win the polls.The committee would send the probe report to the party’s parliamentary panel for action against the guilty legislator. Before that Phukan announced that he would move the court to unearth the truth.

Who ignored party whip?

Four BJP legislators have written to state party president Sarbananda Sonowal clearing their position over the voting controversy in the recent Rajya Sabha polls.Ranjit Das, Manoranjan Das, Dilip Moran and Jadav Deka have apprised Sonowal of how they toed on the party line.They said that they got their ballot papers verified by the party agent Prasanta Phukan before dropping the papers into the boxes.Only the party agent Phukan dropped his ballot papers into the boxes without proper verification.  

Phukan to move HC

Stung by a barrage of criticism and allegations over his role in the Rajaya Sabha polls, BJP MLA Prasanta Phukan on Sunday decided to move the High Court seeking judicial intervention.Phukan said that he would approach the Gauhati High Court on Monday seeking probe into the allegations of indirect help to ensure the victory of the ruling Congress.He asserted that no ballot paper from the BJP legislators stood cancelled and that an impartial probe would unearth the truth.             It is alleged that Phukan, a close associate of education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma intentionally got his ballot paper cancelled to ensure the...

KMSS ups ante on BJP MLA

BJP legislator Prasanta Phukan mires in controversy over an alleged deal with Congress in the recent Rajya Sabha polls.KMSS activists in large number staged dharna in front of his residence in Dibrugarh on Sunday alleging that he struck a deal with the ruling party to ensure smooth sailing of all the three Congress and BPF candidates on Friday.Protestors told Assam Times that Phukan, a close associate of education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma intentionally got his ballot paper cancelled to ensure the defeat of Haidor Hussain.

Armed youths held

Despite round-the-clock-vigil, armed miscreants are moving without any hindrance in BTAD.Security forces have arrested three youths in Kokrajhar and seized arms from their possession on Sunday.The trio were arrested during a combing operation in Tipkai area. The arms include 2 pistols and two magzines. Police interrogation continues.

Youth shot at

A suspected Maoist activist was injured at an incident of shoot out in Tinsukia district on Saturday.The incident took place at a tea garden in Margherita where Assam Rifles jawans were on patrolling duty at night.According to reports, the Assam Rifles jawans asked four youths to halt after they were seen suspiciously moving to and fro in Namdang Tea Estate.But they started fleeing from the spot. One of them injured when the Assam Rifles jawans firing at them. He was rushed to the hospital. Interrogation is going on.
