Anti-tobacco bill soon

Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the bill to ban tobacco is on the cards. Dr Sarma informed the Assam assembly on Wednesday that the bill would be moved after cabinet approval.

the govt should inform all the trade bodies what products are banned or what not banned to save the petty traders from the meaningless harassment from the govt officers and so called many organisations. the sale of smoking items should also be banned in the state.

CM sees Maoist-KMSS link

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today claimed Maoists’ link with the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti.Addressing a press conference in Dispur, he said that only a rapid pace of development would weed out the root of red terrorism.He, however, refused to substantiate his allegations of KMSS-Maoist link.

Cong rally on Feb 16

Come February 16. The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee will hold a huge rally in Guwahati on the youth and women empowerment in the country.Disclosing this at a press conference in Dispur, chief minister Tarun Gogoi said the rally would counter Narendra Modi’s rally slated for February 8.“I am happy to have learnt that Modi will visit Assam. But I am fully prepared to counter him,” said the chief minister.

Hagrama sure of BPF win

Rashmita Gogoi from New DelhiBTC chief Hagrama Mohilary is confident that BPF candidate Biswajeet Daimary will be able to win the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls with the help of Congress support.Mohilary told Assam Times in the sidelines of a function in New Delhi this morning that Daimary finally did not withdraw his nomination in view of his strong chance of victory.But he refused to divulge the winning strategy even after repeated questions. 

CLP meets in Dispur

The Congress legislative party is holding a crucial meeting in Dispur today to fine a slew of strategies to ensure smooth passage of two Bhubneswar Kalita, Dr Sanjay Sinh and Biswajeet Daimary in the Rajya Sabha polls slated for Friday.To be chaired by chief minister Tarun Gogoi, the meeting is expected to be attended by the BPF legislators to help the ruling party chalk out the strategies at the Assam Assembly secretariat at 11 in the morning.Sources told Assam Times that the ruling party is trying its level best to garner two more votes to ensure victory of the trio.

AAKRSU bandh total

Normal life came to grinding halt in the Koch Rajbanshi dominated areas in the lower Assam districts following the 24 hour statewide bandh demanding SC status.Called by the All Assam Koch Rajbanshi Students Union,  the bandh started at 6 this morning where roads started remaining desert, shops and markets, schools and colleges, banks and offices remained closed under the impact of the bandh.In some places the supporters enforced the bandh call by burning tyres on the road. Reports of paralyzing bandh are pouring in from Sonitpur, Darrang, Nagaon and Morigaon districts also.   

Law to stop racial attack

The Union Cabinet is meeting in New Delhi today where the sensational Nido Tania issue is expected to figure.To be presided over by prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh, the meeting along with other issue is likely to discuss a new set of laws to deal with the cases of racial biasness in the capital.The indication came up when a delegation of north east students called on Dr Singh in the capital yesterday demanding justice for the Arunachal Pradesh student who was killed by goons in south Delhi last week.

Nido case report in HC

The Centre and Delhi government are expected to file reports on the sensational killing of Nido Tania before the Delhi High Court on Wednesday.Acting on a suo moto case, the high court on Monday asked the Centre, Delhi Government to file affidavit on the recent dreaded attack on Nido Tania where the victim died. Police have so far arrested six perpetrators during the last 24 hours. Three were remanded to judicial custody while two others would be produced before a local court on Wednesday.
