Sadhana Das passes away

Sadhana Das (69 years), wife of a benevolent social worker of Jorhat Jiten Das has left her mortal body on 21st June, 2007 at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati. She has left behind her husband, her only son Mr. Jyotimoi Das and her two daughters along with many other relatives.

Politics over Naga peace pact!

Union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju on Saturday accused Congress of doing politics over the recently signed Naga peace pact.Talking to reporters in the sidelines of a function in Sonapur in the outskirt of Guwahati, he said that the pact would be made public in due course of time.He said, “Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi along with his Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur counterparts Nabam Tuki and Ibobi Singh welcomed the pact. Immediately after the meeting with Sonia Gandhi, they started opposing it.”He said that peace is top priority for the north eastern region. He claimed to have restored peace in the region during the last 14 months.      

ULFA talks abroad impossible: Kiren

The Centre on Saturday made it plain and simple that the talks with ULFA(I) is not possible abroad.Talking to reporters at Sonapur in the outskirt of Guwahati, Union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju said that sovereignty would be discussed in the talks, if ULFA-I comes forward.Before that Rijiju laid the foundation stone of a NIA office in Sonapur.His announcement assumes significance a week after Paresh Baruah reiterated three conditions for talks with the Centre.

Arunachal chopper still clueless

Yet another army helicopter joins the operations in search of the Pawan Hans chopper which is believed to have crashed in the dense jungle of Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday.But there is hardly any trace of the chopper which went missing on its way to Lungding from Khunsa carrying Tirap DC Kamalesh Joshi.Three chopper along with a Sukhoi jet is concentrating on a jungle near Dimola where the neighbouring villagers claimed to have heard a huge explosion in the sky when the chopper went missing.

BJP couple, 2 others held

Police have arrested a BJP couple along with two others charging them with displacing Don Bosco statue in Bharalumukh on Friday.Police arrested a lady counselor from BJP and her husband along with two youths from Aathgaon area on Saturday morning.They were held minutes after Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced probe into the incident.Talking to reporters in New Delhi on Saturday, Gogoi said that the perpetrators should be punished and that anybody opposing it are free to protest.

Gunmen caught in Narayanpur

Lakhimpur police caught two gunmen after they targeted security forces deployed on Saturday.The incident took place at Narayanpur where two youths started firing at a group of security forces when they were on patrolling duty in the wee hours.When the security forces started retaliation, they tried to leave the spot forcing the police men to chase them.  Identified as Cerula Khan and Aswini Patir, they were overpowered. Police recovered a 9 mm pistol from their possession. Senior police officials have been interrogating the duo.         

Rain water havoc in Guwahati

 Rain waters are back in Guwahati to wreak havoc in the premier north eastern city on following heavy downpour on Saturday. Many parts of the city have come under the massive waterlogging in the wee hours when incessant rains lashed the city for two hours in the midnight. Anil Nagar,  Navin Nagar, lachit Nagar, Six Mile areas are worst affected where sirface communications have come to a grinding halt. The rain waters are refusing to flow into the Brahmaputra through the river Bharalu. Local residents in these affected areas are blaming it all on the GMDA for poor drainage system which is why, the problem persists.   

Peace pact: All out against Modi

Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur chief ministers vowed not to compromise territorial integration in the name of peace of the Naga people.They jointly announced it after the trio talked to Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Friday.They further asked prime minister Narendra Modi to make the Accord public.Flanked by Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and his Arunachal Pradesh counterpart Nabam Tuki, Gogoi said, “We welcome the Accord for restoration of peace in Nagaland.
