Sadhana Das passes away

Sadhana Das (69 years), wife of a benevolent social worker of Jorhat Jiten Das has left her mortal body on 21st June, 2007 at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati. She has left behind her husband, her only son Mr. Jyotimoi Das and her two daughters along with many other relatives.

Four BJP MLAs walked out of the Assembly on Thursday after the House refused to discuss the Morigaon issue where a group of local powerful Congress leaders attacked a police party for trying to arrest a family of Bangladeshi immigrants. Dibrugarh MLA Prashanta Phukan raised the issue as demanding a statement from the government to be opposed by the ruling Congress members. Hundreds of people hit the streets in Morigaon alleging attempts to ensure safety and security of the Bangladeshi immigrants.People of all walks of life thronged the streets on Thursday morning targetting a circle of powerful Congress leaders who have been safeguarding the interesting of the infiltrators. Very recently, a policeman sustained injury when a group of local Congress men allegedly sprang upon him for arresting an immigrant’s family to be deported to Bangladesh under the instruction of the Gauhati High Court. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has suspended the party leader in Morgaon which failed to satisfy the common people. 
The appointment of 89 ACS officers defying the allegations of corruption runs into a hail of protest across the state on Thursday. KMSS is set to hit the streets saying that it has established the allegations of bribery, nepotism and malpractices.    All eyes are fixed on the Gauhati High Court which is all set to hear the public interest litigation filed by KMSS president Akhil Gogoi alleging rampant corruption in the selection process by Assam Public Service Commission where many eligible candidates were deprived. 
 Yet another witch hunting case sends no less anger across the state hours after the Assam government tabled a legislation to firmly deal with these crimes. The incident took place in Dhemaji district where a section of villagers in Jonai assaulted couple at an open space charging them with witch practising. “The villagers caught the couple. Tied the duo at an open space and started assaulting inflicting torture on the couple. “A section of local residents called up policemen who arrived in the spot immediately after the information.  Hundreds of people in Dibrugarh paid their last respect to Kamalesh Joshi along with two others a day after the mortal remains of the Tirap DC and pilots were recovered in Khunsa on Wednesday. The mortal remains were straightly taken to Assam Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh for post-mortem. Then these bodies were taken to the Mohanbari airport where SP and DC along with many others paid their last respect en route to New Delhi on Thursday morning.  
Despite an escalating controversy, the Assam government has cleared the appointment of 89 ACS junior officers  two months after the state public service commission selected their names. Dispur has appointed these officers through a notification issued on Wednesday night. “Process is on to appoint the APS officers in a day or two who were selected by APSC two months back,” said sources. According to government sources, the Gauhati High Court on Friday will hear the PIL filed by KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi. But the court has not asked the government to stop the appointment.

Caught in an escalating controversy the government finally ordered the demolition of the huge wall in Numligarh that has been disrupting the movements of the wild elephants in the entire area. The wild elephants have been unleashing terror in Numligarh soon after the authorities of refinery erected the huge wall a couple of years back. Despite repeated requests, the authorities have not addressed the grievances forcing the government to intervene. The wall would be demolished in a day or two.       
 Amid a pall of gloom hundreds of bereaved people in Tirap paid their last respect to Kamalesh Joshi after the lifeless deputy commissioner arrived in the district headquarters. From ministers to officers, from school children to housewives in the district laid floral wreath at the mortal remains of Joshi who along with two others died when the Pawan Hans chopper carrying them crash landed at a dense jungle on way to Khunsa eight days back. Joshi was a popular DC among the residents of Tirap district who joined the office in 2013. His decomposed body would be flown to his home on Thursday.
