Witch hunting in Jonai

 Yet another witch hunting case sends no less anger across the state hours after the Assam government tabled a legislation to firmly deal with these crimes.

 The incident took place in Dhemaji district where a section of villagers in Jonai assaulted couple at an open space charging them with witch practising.

 “The villagers caught the couple. Tied the duo at an open space and started assaulting inflicting torture on the couple.

 “A section of local residents called up policemen who arrived in the spot immediately after the information. But by them the villagers have left the spot,” said a villager.

 Police, however, arrested two of the villagers and six others involve in the crime are on the run.

The incident took place barely 24 hours after the Assam government brought a legislation in the ongoing assembly session to firmly deal with the witch hunting cases.
