Sadhana Das passes away

Sadhana Das (69 years), wife of a benevolent social worker of Jorhat Jiten Das has left her mortal body on 21st June, 2007 at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati. She has left behind her husband, her only son Mr. Jyotimoi Das and her two daughters along with many other relatives.

Properties worth one crore were reduced to ashes when at least ten shops caught fire in Goalpara district on Saturday.The incident took place at Balapara area where the fire originated at a shop and then started spreading to the adjacent shops. Fire tenders were deployed to deal with the huge inferno. But by then the fire engulfed as many as ten nearby shops.“The extent of damage stands nearly over one crore. The reason of the fire has yet to be ascertained. Preliminary investigation suggest electric short circuit. Details are yet to be learnt,” said a police officer who arrived in the spot to assess the situation. 
Two local businessmen went missing from Mancachar on Saturday. Popularly known as Akidul Islam and Billul Miyan, the duo were suspected to have been kidnapped by militants from across the interstate border. Security forces have stepped up search operations in Chandguri from where the duo went missing.    
Police have stepped up operation against Gopinath Das who has been remaining untraced after police registered a rape against the AIUDF MLA a couple of days back. Boko police on Saturday carried out simultaneous raids in five places in search of Das who allegedly raped his minor domestic help inside his car.A team of Boko police raided a house in Goalpara in search of Das who was not available. The calm is uneasy in Churachandpur after the recent orgy of violence where 8 people lost their lives when Manipur assembly passed three controversial bills.Women groups have been staging dusk to down protest in eight public places across the restive district to deal with possible mob violence. 
The Manipur High Court has summoned Bihar political leader Papu Yadav for forcibly halting a New Delhi bound train in Bihar recently in search of Manipur passengers. The court issued the notice when it took up a public interest litigation filed by Manipur JD(U) president M Tombi. The court further sent notice to the Bihar government in connection with the incident where Yadav and his supporters stopped the train to seek Manipuris which disrupted normal flow of railway traffic.
A brief halt in violence fails to bring down the anger in Churachandpur. The relatives of those killed in the recent orgy of violence have refused to accept the bodies till the controversial bills not withdrawn by the government. Nine bodies have been waiting in the coffins at the morgue of the Churachandpur Civil Hospital to be received by the relatives who are not prepared to do so in protest against the bills. Buckling under the mounting pressure, eleven tribal MLAs from the area have put in their papers so far. 
 Vandalism, arson, police-picketer clash have marred the 12 hours statewide Assam bandh on Saturday called in protest against the refugee status for on Muslim Hindu and Pakistani nationals in India. The paralyzing bandh began at 6 in the morning across the state where supporters in many places enforced the call by burning tyres on the vital roads to restrict the movement of vehicles. A student sustained serious injury when two groups of students clashed with each other in Hojai over the bandh call.
