Sadhana Das passes away

Sadhana Das (69 years), wife of a benevolent social worker of Jorhat Jiten Das has left her mortal body on 21st June, 2007 at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati. She has left behind her husband, her only son Mr. Jyotimoi Das and her two daughters along with many other relatives.

Himanta to quit as Cong MLA

No bail for absconding Gopinath

There seems to be no respite for Gopinath Das as the Gauhati High Court rejected an anticipatory bail petition for the Boko AIUDF MLA in connection with the minor domestic help case. The court, however, asked police to submit the case diary required in the next hearing slated for September 22. On the other hand, police have been carrying out raids in a number of places in search of the MLA who has been absconding.The police have registered a case against the MLA on charges of wrongfully confining a minor girl and also a case under the POCSO Act.

Ministry expansion on Wednesday

A day after recruiting 13 new parliamentary secretaries chief minister Tarun Gogoi is set to induct two minister afresh in is cabinet. The beneficiaries are Gautom Roy and Siddique Ahmed.Gogoi is understood to have told the duo over telephone on Monday. Governor PB Acharya will administer oath of office and secrecy to both Roy and Ahmed on Wednesday.The 13 parliamentary secretaries will take oath from the chief minister in the same function at the Raj Bhawan. Siddique, the close associate of Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma was shunted out last year after Dr Sama resigned before the governor. Later Roy, who was a loyalist of the dissident camp was axed when Gogoi reshuffled his cabinet. 

Punishment for nuisance offence

The Shillong police have fined three persons Rs 5000 each alleging offence of nuisance under the influence of alcohol in two different case in the capital city. The first incident took place on August 19 at night  when police picked up Sujjit Singh for nuisance under the influence of alcohol at Keating Road. The CJM court in Shillong convicted him with a fine of Rs.5, 000. In yet another case on the same ay, police picked up Panbir Ray Wahlang and Denis Swer for the offence of nuisance under the influence of alcohol at Lachumiere near Horse Shoe building. Apiculture awareness in Tezu

A bee keeping awareness and sericulture development training evokes no less response from local farmers at Tezu area in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh. Lok Adalat in West Siang

A Lok Adalat in West Siang has disposed off 24 cases organized in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate on Saturday. Presided over by CJM Tage Halley, the court took 57cases for hearing out of which 24 criminal compoundable to be disposed off on the spot. The remaining cases could not be disposed due to absent of victim or complainant.

CM announces 13 parliamentary Secys

In a bid to reward the MLAs who left dissidents, chief minister Tarun Gogoi has announced 13 parliamentary secretaries who would take oath on September 16. Massive rail blockade in Bongaigaon

Hundreds of Koch Rajbanshi students in Bongaigaon blocked the railway lines intensifying the demands for ST status at an earlier date which forces several trains to remain stranded for several hours on Monday.  Hundreds of students and local residents thronged the railway tracks in the morning and blocked the movement of trains from 6 in the morning.Talking to Assam Times, they threaten to launch more agitation if the Centre fails to accord the status early. “We will resort to more intensified agitation if we are not accorded ST status. Manipur students support Assam stir

NIA summons ULFA chairman

The National Investigation Agency has summoned ULFA chairman Abhijit Hazarika in connection with a case registered against him. In a letter, the country’s terrorist activities investigation agency has asked him to appear in its office at 10 in the morning on September 30. NIA officials have dropped a copy of the letter to his family members in Nagaon on Saturday.
