Sadhana Das passes away

Sadhana Das (69 years), wife of a benevolent social worker of Jorhat Jiten Das has left her mortal body on 21st June, 2007 at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati. She has left behind her husband, her only son Mr. Jyotimoi Das and her two daughters along with many other relatives.

No byepolls in Jalukbari: Expert

Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma pins hopes on fresh mandate as BJP candidate from Jalukbari. But there is a chance for by poll in Jalukbari. Talking to Assam Times, constitutional expert Dr CJS Das said any bye poll just one year before the assembly does not make sense. “Assam has only 6 or 7 months to go to the assembly polls---less than a year. Hence, bye poll is not required,” said Dr Das. He said same policy is applicable if other dissident MLAs who are preparing to join BJP. CM reviews law and order

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi reviewed the state’s law and order situation at a meeting of top ranked police officials on Wednesday.Attended by DGP Khagen Sarma the meeting further discussed the allegations of rape against AIUDF MLA Gopinath Das.    

Centre releases Rs 193 cr

Amid a bitter blame game between Sarbananda Sonowal and Tarun Gogoi over the flood assistance, the Centre on Wednesday released Rs 193 crore to Dispur.The Chief Minister’s Office told Assam Times that Union home minister Rajnath Singh informed it to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi over telephone in the evening.The Centre released the amount hours after Gogoi strongly took on the Centre for not releasing the flood assistance to Dispur.    

AIUDF MLA to be arrested

Police men probing the rape charges against Gopinath Das have been searching the AIUDF MLA which is still on the run.A team of senior police officials simultaneously raided his residences in Lalganesh area and MLA hostel to be questioned in connection with the rape charge brought against him by his minor domestic help.But he was not found available. He is believed to have been hiding at an undisclosed location after police formally registered the case against him.

Protest resumes in High Court

ormalcy refuses to resume in Gauhati High Court, where the lawyers staged sit in demonstration on Wednesday highlighting a number of serious allegations against acting chief justice K Sreedhar Rao.At 10 in the morning the lawyers thronged the court premises and started the demonstration raising banners and festoons in their hands. The demonstration resumed hardly a week after the court set up a panel to study the allegations against the acting chief justice amid the conflict with the lawyers over the public interest litigation.

Saina's Rs 1 lakh for flood victims

In a major show of solidarity, World No. 1 shuttler Saina Nehwal has donated Rs 1 lakh to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the rehabilitation of the flood victims of Assam.She made her contribution recently at the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to provide relief for the flood victims.More than ten lakh people have been affected by the Assam floods, which claimed at least thirty lives.

Dhubri girls rescued in Delhi

Even a set of stringent laws have failed to stop girl trafficking in the north eastern states. Delhi police on Wednesday rescued two girls a month after they went missing from Dhubri.Acting on a tip off a team of Delhi police raided a house in Rohini area where the two girls hailing from Dhubri area were recovered. A team of police from Dhubri is leaving for New Delhi to bring the girls back to home.   

Flood scene improves a lot

 Flood scene starts improving day by day. The water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries start receding following the halt of the rains.The Brahmaputra flowing below the danger level in Dibrugarh, Jorhat Guwahati and Dhubri suggesting more relief for over 10 lakh people.In the worst-hit Dibrugarh and Dhemaji, water level is receding rapidly. But some low lying areas are still under waters. “It would take a few more days for Dhemaji town to completely get out of the blues. Only the vital roads are clear.
