Himanta to quit as Cong MLA

Nearly a month after he joined BJP Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is moving the state assembly to resign as Congress MLA from Jalukbari on Tuesday.

Dr Sarma who is set to put in his papers before the state assembly Speaker Pranab Kumar Gogoi. But the former MLA is likely to face the anti-defection laws. According to the experts “Dr Sarma is a fit case for the anti defection laws as he failed to resign as Jalukbari MLA before formally joining BJP which is a crime.”

Notably, Dr Sarma who has been leading dissidence against Tarun Gogoi for the last two years confirmed his association with BJP in August after he met party president Amit Shah in New Delhi.

Ten days after it he formally joined BJP without resigning as Congress MLA from Jalukbari. Initially, he left it to the Congress leadership to decide on his fate. But when the Congress leadership refused to disqualify him, he decided to quit as MLA.
