Pongyong Tekchai Released
Pongyong Tekchai, a collection of articles, written by noted writer Rajiv Ahmed and published by Sampriti Prakashan, was released on Mondy at a function organised in Guwahati Press club. The book was inaugurated by senior journalist Hyder Hussain and the meeting was presided over by veteran journalist Dhirendranath Chakarvorty. Inagurating the book journalist Hussain hoped that the book will able to feed up the needs of voracious readers’ community of Assamese language. Veteran journalist Chakorvorty opined that it is high to practise literary culture in the state. Dr. Jayanta Madhab, noted economist was also present in the ceremony including some other dignitaries. Mentionable is that the articles contained in the book deal with various topics including some important incidents of the Assam History. Besides, the title of the book carries a notable incident in the Ahom History. According to the publisher readers may also buy the book on on-line at www.assamtimes.org.

The Assam wing of the Students’ Federation of India(SFI) staged symbolic protestat Dighalipukuripar, Guwahati on June 21 against the UGC’s recent decision to hold NET once in a year. The students’ organization rued that if the UGC implements its recent decision regarding the NET then a large number of students would loss chance to appear in the exam. Presently, the UGC holds NET twice in a year. Moreover, the UGC has decided to decrease pass percentage of the NET from present 15% to 6%. Terming the move as disastrous for the book publishers of the state, GiriPad Devchodhury, proprietor of Bani Prakash urged the government to change its order.
