Pongyong Tekchai Released

Pongyong Tekchai, a collection of articles, written by noted  writer Rajiv Ahmed and published by Sampriti Prakashan, was released on Mondy at a  function organised in Guwahati Press club. The book was inaugurated by senior journalist Hyder Hussain and the meeting was presided over by veteran journalist Dhirendranath Chakarvorty. Inagurating the book journalist Hussain hoped that the book will able to feed up the needs of voracious readers’ community of Assamese language. Veteran journalist Chakorvorty opined that it is high to practise literary culture in the state. Dr. Jayanta Madhab, noted economist was also present in the ceremony including some other dignitaries. Mentionable is that the articles contained in the book deal with various topics including some important incidents of the Assam History. Besides, the title of the book carries a notable incident in the Ahom History. According to the publisher readers may also buy the book on on-line at www.assamtimes.org.

The city based voluntary organization Save Guwahati Bulid Guwahati (SGBG) condoled on the death of former congress MP Santosh Mohan Deb. In a press release the SGBG said that the demise of the veteran politician is an irreparable lost to the organization. “ He (Deb) helped us a great extent when we went to Delhi to meet then Prime Minster Dr. Manmohan Singh to submit a memorandum urging problem of indigenous people’s land problem”, said Dhiren Baruah, former president of the organization. Professor Srinath Barooah, founder vice-chancellor of Krisnakanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU), has denied allegations of financial and other irregularities, leveled against him by his former colleagues. In a horrifying development, a poor flood-affected and differently able farmer of Bordowatop locality in Marigaon district committed suicide on Sunday. The farmer, identified as Kamal Nath, reportedly hanged himself in a temporary camp set-up for flood-affected people of the locality. The flood related death climbed up to 50 in Assam as six more people, reportedly, died drowning in flood waters in different parts of the state.
