World Environment Day observed at Pobitora

World Environment Day was organised at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoli High School near Pobitora Wild-life sanctuary with a day-long programme, by Pragjyoti Communications. The evevt included a procession, quiz, essay competition,  extempro speech and drawing competition among the school students. Dr. Amarjyoti Kashyap, special guest of the occasion, took part in an interactive session. A commemorative volume namely ‘Pobitora’ has also been released on the occasion.

Flood toll goes up to 43

The flood toll has gone up by 43 with the report of one more death on Tuesday. Over six lakh people are still trapped in the calamity.

Rescue team in Goalpara on Tuesday fished out yet another body taking the toll in the worst-hit district by 20. This is apart from 16 deaths in Kamrup Rural and 6 in Kamrup Metro and one in Dhubri.

Altogether 165 relief camps have been operating in the affected districts where over 1.5 lakh people are staying at this moment.

In Goalpara, around 70,000 people are staying at relief camps, while almost 60,000 people are living in such places in Nagaon. But the Brahmaputra is still flowing above the danger mark at Nimatighat in Jorhat district.

Former chief minister Tarun Gogoi has raised serious doubts over the government’s sincerity on the process to update the national register of citizens.

Participating in the debate on the governor's address on Thursday, the senior Congress leader said the process in processing at a snails pace. He observed that instead of detecting and deporting the immigrants, the Centre is trying to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955.

He also questioned the delay in the complete sealing of the Indo-Bangla border even two years after NDA formed the government at the Centre.

Gohain takes oath as Union minister

Rajen Gohain took oath as Union minister when Prime Minister Narendra Modi expanded his council of ministers inducting the Nagaon MP along with 18 others on Tuesday. President Pranab Mukherjee administered the senior BJP leader from Assam the oath of office and secrecy at a function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in the morning in presence of Modi along with his ministerial colleagues.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal along with a few top state BJP leaders were present in the function. Gohain, the three fourth time MP from Nagaon got the invitation to take oath two days ago when he was in his home district.
