Very happy to know that the association is continuing to do well and growing. I had the privilege of being the President of the association around 1981-82 when I was a Professor of IIT-Madras ( now Chennai). During Assam Movement, we published the Brahmaputra Beckons. All nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha polls have been found valid on Wednesday. Now all eyes are fixed for February 7.The confirmation came from the returning officers Gauranga Prasad Das after the scrutiny of the papers at his office chamber in presence of the candidates and their representatives.BPF candidate Biswajeet Daimary and Opposition consensus Haidor Hussain were present in the office of the returning officer while parliamentary affairs minister Nilomoni Sen Deka represented Congress candidates Bhubneswar Kalita and Sanjay Singh.
AICC screening committee meets on Wednesday in New Delhi to prepare the list of the candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.The meeting is scheduled to be chaired by Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shindhe, who was appointed as the chairman of the AICC screening body for Assam in presence of APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.APCC poll committee on Monday prepared the panels of candidates for 12 seats.    
AASU vows to intensify protest against the fielding of Dr Sanjay Singh in the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls calling it an insult to the Assamese.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Wedenesday, adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya took on Chief minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita alleging that they don’t want to get an indigenous personality to represent the state in parliament.The AASU leaders said they would hang the effigies of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Tarun Gogoi, and Bhubneswar Kalita in public places to be thrown out in on the Brahmaputra.  
Dr Sanjay Singh’s fielding in the Rajya Sabha runs into a hail of protest across the state putting Congress in a fix three months before the general election.All Assam Students Union activists on Tuesday evening took out procession in some places in protest against Dr Singh hours after he filed nomination for Rajya Sabha polls.  The protesters burnt the effigies of Sonia Gandhi, chief minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita. They further threatened to intensify the protest.  
Guljar Hussain was buried with full state honour in his ancestral home in Bihpuria on Wednesday a day after the additional superintendent of police in Sonitpur district died in an ambush by NDFB-S.Thousands thronged at his residence on Monday night to pay their past respect to the lifeless Hussain after it was brought to Bihpuria.His was buried on Wednesday at 10 in the morning in presence of top ranked police and civil officials along with hundreds of his friends and relatives.
A speeding train in Guwahati crushed to death a person from Mongoldoi on Wednesday morning.The shocking incident took place near the Saraighat Bridge when the Ashiruddin Ahmed who worked with the agriculture department was on his way to the city on official duty. He hailed from Shantipur in Mongoldoi. Later his body was rushed to his residence after clearing the post mortem formalities.   
Sensational revelations have come to light after the powerful grenade explosion severed hands of Raju Ali in Sivasagar town on Tuesday.Ali told police that he saw two motorcycle born youths lobbed the grenade at him. But according to sources, he was an army informer and he kept some explosives inside his home in BG Road near the Station Chariali. Notably, crude bombs were found in and around his residents at regular intervals.    The explosion took place at his house at around 11 in the morning. Ali’s hands were severed under the impact of the explosion.Later security forces recovered one more crude bomb inside his house. Ali was rushed to the Assam Medical College Hospital....
In a sudden move the AICC has changed the order of candidates fielded for the upcoming Rajya Sabbha polls.APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita is given the first choice taking Dr Sanjay Singh to the second choice while Biswajeet Daimary would be the third choice candidate.  AICC has changed the order of candidates after Haidor Hussain filed nomination as the Opposition’s consensus candidate.    
An irate mob in Dhekiajuli vandalized NDFB’s designated camp hours after Sonitpur additional S Guljar Hussian and a policemen were killed in an encounter at Haulangi on Tuesday.Local residents in large number came out the street and thronged the NDFB designated camp. A section of the people attacked several pro talk militants while some others vandalized the designated camp.Later security forces rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday ordered intensified action against NDFB-S militants after they killed Sonitpur’s additional SP Guljar Hussain and a policeman at an encounter in Dhekiajuli in the morning.Talking to reporters at the Assam Assembly secretariat in Dispur, Gogoi said that the government won’t allow the Bodo militant outfits to carry out any attack further.
