Very happy to know that the association is continuing to do well and growing. I had the privilege of being the President of the association around 1981-82 when I was a Professor of IIT-Madras ( now Chennai). During Assam Movement, we published the Brahmaputra Beckons. But the party legislative body is holding a crucial meeting at its headquarters on Monday to discuss the political scenario.Both AIUDF and AGP have been trying to rope in BJP. But of no avail. BJP has given the ruling party an easy walk over citing lack of strength.
Rajya Sabha MP from BPF Biswajeet Daimary has filed his nomination papers on Monday seeking reelection to the Upper House with the help of Congress.Accompanied by BPF president Hagrama Mohilary and Deputy BTC chief Khampha Borgayari, Daimary filed his nomination at 11-30 in the morning before the returning officer Gauranga Prasad Das in Dispur.His term will expire on April 13 along with Bhubneswar Kalita from Congress and Birendra Prasad Baishya from AGP.

Assam Congress legislators are holding a meet to chalk out a slew of strategies to put up an outstanding performance in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.The brain storming meet began at 11-30 in the morning at the legislators’ conference in the Assembly House premises.   Grievances of a section of legislators are unlikely to figure in the meeting to be presided over by chief minister Tarun Gogoi. Gogoi apprised his fellow legislators of the outcome of the meeting with party vice president Rahul Gandhi.

But sources told Assam Times that the APCC in rank and file are dead opposed to the move to elect a candidate from UP who was closed to Rajiv Gandhi.On the other hand, the party has yet to disclose the name of the third choice candidate for the Rajya Sabha polls slated for February 7. According to sources, either Bhubneswar Kalita or Kirip Chaliha is set to be fielded for the seat.

The entire Guwahati city plunges into a dearth of potable water from Monday morning. The situation is expected to improve only after the next 72 hours.Public health engineering workers are on strike from 5 in the morning alleging the failure of the government to redress their grievances.The workers on strike have not allowed the hired men to run the water pumps at the Pandu Ghat. They raised their 14 point demands last week threatening strike from Monday. But of no avail forcing them to resort to strike for the next 72 hours.
