Very happy to know that the association is continuing to do well and growing. I had the privilege of being the President of the association around 1981-82 when I was a Professor of IIT-Madras ( now Chennai). During Assam Movement, we published the Brahmaputra Beckons. Noted singer Angarag Mahanta said on Friday that he has nobody to giude him fron now and onwards. A day after losing his father and folk song exponent Khagen Mahanta said,” I  am shocked. I have not seen him at the end.” Mahanta arrived in the morning only from Mumbai where he stays with his wife and boy. The cultural icon died of cardaic arrest at his own residence on Thursday sending shockwaves across the state.       
The mortal remains of Khagen Mahanta consigned to flames on Friday a day after the folk song exponent passed away at his own residence in Guwahati. His son Angarag Mahanta lit the funeral pyre at a plot adjacent to the Sankardev Kalakhetra in presence of thousands of bereaved people in the afternoon. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, social welfare minister Akon Bora, forest minister Rockybul Hussain, cultural affairs minister Pranati Phukan, Guwahati MP Bijoya Chakravartty were prominent among those who attended the funeral. Khagen Mahanta’s sudden is a irrepairable lost on Assam’s cutural front. This was more or less if what a cross section of the people told Assam Times on Friday. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who visited Mahanta’s bereaved family on Thursday apart from attending the funeral function in Panjabari said that Mahanta united the people of the various castes and creeds with his songs. BJP, AGP, AIUDF leaders also joined the condolence with a number of messages. All Assam Students Union said that a permanent site is necessary to keep his works alive.More and more condolence messages are pouring in from different parts of the state.        
Noted singer Khagen Mahanta is no more. The exponent in folk and traditional music of Assam died a sudden death at his own residence in Guwahati on Thursday afternoon. The end came at 3 in the afternoon sending shockwaves across the state. Popularly known as the king of bihu, Mahanta is survived by his wife Archana Mahanta and son Angaraag Mahanta . Mahanta was born to Harendra Nath Mahanta and Laxmipriya Deviin in Nagaon who showed his musical talent in his childhood. The simmering dissidence within the Congress legislature party would soon die down if senior AICC leader Ghulam Nabi Azad is to be believed. Talking to reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday evening, the AICC leader dealing with the crisis along with Dr CP Joshi and Motilal Vhora said that the amicable solution was in sight and that the party will gear up for the 2016 Assembly polls. Karbi Anglong police recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition during a combing operation against UPLA inside a dense jungle on Wednesday. These include 6 AK-47 rifles, 21 grenades, a pistol along with many other ammunitions-- --seized from Nawang area in the district bordering Meghalaya. Agriculture minister Nilomoni Sen Deka met Sarat Borotoky Wednesday  on fuelling the specualtion of Chief minister’s new measures to contain the dissident ministers and MLAs. Deka, the trusted minister of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi arrived in Sarat Borkotoky’s official residence at 11 in the morning. The duo held a close door meeting for nearly one hour in presence of Gautom Roy who is also known to be a close associate of Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma. Health and education minister Dr Himanta Biswa has been camping in New Delhi to call on Congress president Sonia Gandhi to formally raise the demand for change in CLP leadership. According to sources, Gandhi is unlikely to meet Dr Sarma on Wednesday. Forest guards in Kaziranga claimed to have killed a rhino poacher at an encounter on Wednesday. But four others managed to flee from the spot. The heavy gun battle took place near Gobrai forest camp where five poachers were believed to have been trying to kill a rhino on Tuesday midnight. One of the poachers was killed while four others managed to escape from the spot. Operation is still going on to flush out the rhino poachers who have already killed over 20 rhinos so far this year.          
Police on Tuesday claimed to have captured 6 UPLA militants responsible for killing of Nityananda Goswami and Ratul Nunisa who were killed at an encounter in Karbi Anglong district last week. The UPLA militants including their deputy commander in chief Nikunj Kathar were captured during a combing operation inside the a dense jungle in the hills district bordering Meghalaya.
