I had the privilege of being the President of the association around 1981-82 when I was a Professor of IIT-Madras ( now Chennai). During Assam Movement, we published the Brahmaputra Beckons. Atleast 15 people had a narrow escape when the houses they lived in were collapsed in landslide in Guwahati on Tuesday.           The incident took place in the wee hours at Jyotinagar near Bamunimoidam when a wall slipped into their houses. The family members managed to escape the tragedy.
A tragic mishap claimed the life of a pilgrim near Kamakhya temple on Tuesday.           The accident took place near the ancient at Nilachal hilltop where the pilgrim who came from West Bengal was knocked down by a vehicle in the morning.
AICC leader Mallikarjun Kharge took stock of the voice of growing resentment within the party ministers and MLAs in Guwahati on Monday. Kharge, who is on a stock taking visit to Guwahati asked the legislators to ensure victory in the 2016 assembly polls. A section of the legislatures strongly advocated change of chief minister to ensure poll victory. Some others want action against the dissident ministers and MLAs saying that it would harm the party in the polls.
Suspected NDFB militants are believed to have kidnapped an engineer from Andhra Pradesh Haflong last week. Sources have confirmed a demand of Rs. 6 crore ransom for the release forcing police to launch a combing operation in the entire district. Identified as Nagamalleswara Rao, a native of the Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh, is employed with a private firm in Assam.  According to police, he was abducted on June 16 as he was working as the manager of a stone crusher unit. The reason for abduction is extortion. Around five suspected militants entered the stone crushing unit at Kalachand, about 60 kilometres from Haflong and kidnapped the 36-year-old manager.  
Braving incessant rains, devotees from the state and outside are pouring in Nilachal hilltop after the ambubachi festival got underway on Sunday. Over 2 lakh devotees are arriving from different parts of the state to make a glimpse of the festival near the Kamakhya temple. More people are expected to land in the historic place when the trains carrying the pilgrims are set to arrive in Guwahati on Monday. AICC leader Mallikarjun Kharge is on a visit to Guwahati  on Monday to lead a protest over the move to hike the train fares. According to AICC sources, Kharge who was the railway minister in the UPA government would take on the Modi government for the proposed hike in the passenger and freight rates. Notably, initially the Modi government proposed to hike the rail fares citing a pending proposal during the UPA government. But Kharge made it plain that the entire proposal was left to the next government.           
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has skipped his trip to New Delhi on Monday after AICC rescheduled its crucial meeting where the party’s top policy making body was to discuss the Lok Sabha poll debacle. AICC rescheduled the meeting following  Rahul Gandhi’s foreign trip. The meeting to be held on July 6 is expected to make some changes in the government and party. The meeting is unlikely to consider the dissident CLP members’ plea for change of chief minister as it was expected earlier. Dr CP Joshi, Motilal Vhora, Dr Ghulam Nabi Azad, AK Antony and Bhubneswar Kalita are scheduled to attend the meeting.  
Normal life in many parts of Guwahati has come to a grinding halt following massive water logging from Saturday night after heavy downpour lashed the city for several hours. Parts of the busy RG Baruah Road and GS Road have come under the artificial flood causing much inconvenience for the people following the incessant rains. The massive waterlogging further results in traffic snarl in several parts of the city. The worst-hit areas include Chandmari, Silpukhuri, Anil nagar, Lachit Nagar, Nabin Nagar forcing the local residents to remain confined to their homes.

The doors of the ancient temple will remain closed till Thursday.  
Railway ministry’s move to hike pssenger and freight rates have evoked protest and condemnation across Assam on Saturday. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi condemned the move saying it a blow to the common people. In  statement Gogoi called it a breach of trust people reposed on Modi and his government. He further urged the government to consider it afresh. Several political parties, organizations and individuals have opposed the move and pleged to stage protest against the move. Some other partes indirectly supporting Modi said that the common passengers could have been saved. AGP opposed the move and asked Modi to stick to the poll promises.
