Prime Minister Narendra Modi comes in for sharp criticism across the state a day after he advocated allowing Bangladeshi migrants to work in the north east with visa. Sharply reacting the move a day after chief minister Tarun Gogoi opposed it, All Assam Students Union (AASU) said that they won’t allow the Centre to do it. Talking to Assam Times, AASU leaders alleged that the move would harm the entire region. “At a time when we have been struggling to detect and deport the Bangladeshi immigrants the prime minister is trying to downplay the issue even by ignoring his poll promises. It would further compound the issue,” said an AASU leader. An AJYCP leader said,” BJP is also...
Narendra Modi’s green signal to Bhutan over the construction of big dams in the Himalayan kingdom generated anger and protest across Assam. Various political parties, organizations and individual have vehemently criticized the prime minister for his nod in Bhutan to construct the big dam that posing a serious threat to the downstream areas. A number of organizations operating in lower Assam have called it a devastating step that can wash away a huge portion of Barpeta and Nalbari districts. CPI-ML strongly slammed the prime minister alleging that Modi has gone back to his pre poll words. Talking to Assam Times, party leaders said,” during his poll campaign, Modi assured Assam of safety...
A section of AICC leaders is understood to have devised a mechanism to end dissidence in CLP by changing chief minister. They are averse to allow Tarun Gogoi to continue as chief minister. But top AICC sources told this correspondent that there is hardly any chance for change in chief minister. The meeting slated for June 23 in New Delhi is expected to discuss the overall party affairs two years ahead of the assembly polls. Sonia Gandhi is believed to have confirmed Gogoi as chief minister till the 2016 assembly polls. If that’s all, Gogoi will be able to continue as chief minister who is prepared to reshuffle his cabinet after June 23. To be chaired by vice...
Will Tarun Gogoi be able to complete his term as Chief minister? All eyes are fixed on June 23. AICC pulls up its sleeves to end dissidence at a brainstorming session in New Delhi. To be chaired by vice president Rahul Gandhi, the meeting is expected to discuss the strategies for the 2016 assembly polls in presence of chief minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita along with AICC leaders Ahmed Patel, Dr CP Joshi, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Motilal Vhora. Party high command was believed to have contemplated change in chief minister to end the CLP crisis. But according to sources, there is hardly any possibility of change in chief minister. Notably, AICC leaders on Thursday gave...
Dulumoni Rabha’s mother and brother work in stone quarries to make ends meet. Nikumoni Kalita’s father digs sand from the river to earn his family’s household expenses. Popy Rabha’s mother pulls a hand cart, sells snack in the weekly local market so that her family can have their next meal. Apart from abject poverty, there is another point that binds these girls in Assam’s Rani area along the state’s borders with Meghalaya – they are looking at football to take them out of their drudgery. And they have to thank Hem Das, veteran coach from Guwahati, who spends his own money to teach football around 40 girls like them. Now, even as the world is celebrating the FIFA World Cup fever, their...
Prime Minister Narendra Modi comes in for sharp criticism in Assam for his alleged permission to Bhutan for construction of a dam that threatens to wash away a huge area in lower Assam. Various political parties and organizations across the state are taking on the new prime minister alleging that his green signal to the Himalayan kingdom to construct big dams would spell no less disaster in lower Assam. The Asom Gana Parishad is first to react sharply alleging that Assam is not safe at all at the hands of the new government. Congress leaders told Assam Times that they would examine the issue and would react in appropriate course of time. Talking to Assam Times, KMSS leaders said that...
It is hard to believe. But true. Poisonous drugs are flooding the pharmacies across the state posing serious threat to the health sector. Banned drugs are still for sale in the open market. Analgin is easily available in the pharmacies. Doctors do not prescribe the tablets. But consumers buy it as pain killer which can cause bone marrow depression. Similarly consumption of cisapride to get rid of acidity and constipation can cause irregular heartbeat. Similarly, one who takes phenolphthalein for laxative runs the risk of cancer. But strange are the ways of the health department. The heavily manned department has yet to step in. “Why the drugs inspectors are averse to conduct raid in the...
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi held a special round of talks with four ministers and MLAs hours after he arrived in Guwahati on Wednesday. The ministers and MLAs are tightlipped on the crucial meeting with the chief minister at the latter’s Koinadhora residence. They were believed to discussed the impending cabinet reshuffle.
Amid deescalating political temperature in Dispur, chief minister Tarun Gogoi pulls up his sleeves to exercise a drastic reshuffle of his council of ministers. Sources told Assam Times that Gogoi is under pressure to end the two year long paralyzing dissidence. That’s why, he is believed to have cleared the decks to appoint his deputy in the much-awaited reshuffle. Who is the lucky one? Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma’s name is doing round the corners. But there is no official confirmation. A circle of ministers from the pro and anti-Gogoi camps are set to be axed while four of the aspirants from the chief minister’s camp might be accommodated. Gogoi got the green signal from party high...
Problems after problems seem to have crippled Guwahati these days. The pride of the north eastern region continues to grapple with massive water logging and traffic snarl apart from the porous man holes that turn into death traps at regular intervals. But why? What makes the principal city in the eastern part of the country to coexist with so much problems? The government set up Guwahati metropolitan development authority to give the city a fresh lease of life. The budgetary allocation has been huge. But only to go down the drains if the plights plaguing the city is any indication. During our on the spot investigation, a great deal of sensational facts and figures have come to light. The...
