Very happy to know that the association is continuing to do well and growing. I had the privilege of being the President of the association around 1981-82 when I was a Professor of IIT-Madras ( now Chennai). During Assam Movement, we published the Brahmaputra Beckons. Congress president Sonia Gandhi is all set to take the final call on the paralyzing dissidence within the party legislative body. AICC leader Mallikarjun Kharge has submitted his findings before Sonia Gandhi on the dissidence issue within the Assam Congress legislators. A simultaneous drive to evict the illegal settlers in the Guwahati hilltops is underway. Consisting of executive magistrates, GMDA, GMC officials along with security forces, the specially setup teams launched the operation in 377 vulnerable spots where the settlers have been asked to come down from the hill tops within 24 hours. Many huts and buildings have been demolished during the full scale eviction drive. The district administration has further setup some refugee camps for the displaced people. //

A tough kamrup (metro) district administration is on a full scale drive to evict the illegal settlers on the Bharalu river bank. Teams comprising executive magistrates, GMDA, GMC and water resources development department officials are carrying out the drive from Monday morning. The eviction drive began from Bhangagarh area where hundreds of huts were dismentled evoking sharp reaction from many sections of the people.
There is forecast of more rainfall to add to the flood woes in Guwahati. According to the Guwahati meteorological centre, heavy rains would lash Guwahati during the last 12 hours. Heavy downpour accompanied by thunderstorm is likely to hit the premier north eastern city now caught in massive water logging in many areas.
There seems to be no end to the monsoon misery for the Guwahatians. Rainwaters are wreaking havoc again in the parts disrupting normal life on Monday.Many areas in Guwahati have come under the rainwaters following the incessant rains that lashed the city for the last couple of hours.Massive waterlogging on the GS Road, RG Baruah Road near Bhangagarh, Christianbast, Chandmari have forced the vehicles to stay off in the morning.Anil Nagar, Lachitnagar, Nabin Nagar, Tarun Nagar got some relief on Sunday as the weather improved a little bit. But these areas have again come under the rainwaters on Monday giving the local residents more misery.
Stages are set. Dispur is all out against illegal settlers in the Guwahati hilltops and wetlands. The Kamrup district administration has set up nine teams of government officials to remove the illegal settlers in the hiltops fearing recurrance of landslide tragedy in near future.To be headed by executive magistrate apart from GMC, GMDA, revenue department and police, the teams are touring the vulnerable areas to force the settlers leave their houses.
Caught in a Catch-22 situation, chief minister Tarun Gogoi has asked the Centre to expedite the steps to set up the proposed Brahmaputra River Valley Authority to firmly deal with the perennial flood problem. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gogoi said that Dispur has cleared the decks to set up BVRA in 2012. But the proposal has been pending before the Centre for the last two years. Sources told Assam Times that the Centre wants political representation of the north in the proposed BRVA in view of the failure of the Brahmaptra Board in the absence of political leadership.
Caught in a barrage of criticism for rain water havoc in Guwahati , Chief minister Tarun Gogoi has asked the Kamrup metro district administration to launch eviction drive against encroachments in the wetlands and hills areas in the city. Chairing a meeting of the Kamrup metro district administration officials on Sunday evening he said that the hills and wetlands must be cleared of encroachment as soon as possible. After the meeting the authorties agreed to launch an eviction drive on Monday morning.
