Sadhana Das passes away

Sadhana Das (69 years), wife of a benevolent social worker of Jorhat Jiten Das has left her mortal body on 21st June, 2007 at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati. She has left behind her husband, her only son Mr. Jyotimoi Das and her two daughters along with many other relatives.

In yet another move that can ignite the anti-dam stir across the north eastern region, NHPC starts resuming the hydel dam construction at Gerukamukh. NHPC is believed to recruited many workers to be heavily guarded by the security forces. No worker is allowed to come out of the construction fearing attack by the anti-dam protestors.NHPC has allegedly resumed the hydel dam construction without any go-ahead from the expert committee who have been studying the allegations by the anti dam protestors. Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma embroils in yet another controversy after he made public his move to join BJP.  Highly placed sources told Assam Times that AICC has yet to receive any letter from the former minister.On the other hand, APCC has confirmed that Dr Sarma has not formally resigned from the party before he met BJP president Amit Shah in New Delhi on Sunday.This has forced the party to suspend Dr Sarma from the party’s primary membership on Tuesday. Delhi police busted a major sex racket after recovering three minor girls on Wednesday. Acting on some disturbing inputs, a police team conducted a raid at a room in Narayan area where the three minors girls were rescued.Delhi police are in touch with their counterparts in Assam to handover the rescued girls.

Police have arrested Rubul Ali two days after he along with his associate raped a minor girl inside their bus on Sunday.Rubul was picked up from Baihata Chariali during an intensified operation after thousands of people hit the streets demanding immediate arrest of the culprits involved in it.Another accused Arsed Ali has been absconding.  The raped the 13 year girl inside the bus after it arrived in Goreswar from Guwahati. Local residents on Monday morning rescued her when she tried to escape the perpetrators.

Assam Congress has suspended Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma two days after the Jalukbari MLA confirmed his move to join BJP.According to APCC sources, Dr Sarma who has been doing dissidence against Tarun Gogoi as chief minister has been suspended alleging anti party activities.The former minister is all set to join BJP at huge party rally in Guwahati on August 28. The suspension assumes significance two days after he sent his resignation letter to AICC after his meeting with BJP president Amit Shah.
Thousands of people hit the streets in Goreswar demanding exemplary punishment for the driver and his associate who allegedly gangraped a minor girl inside their bus on Sunday.With banners and festoons, local residents in Goreswar came out of their homes asking police to immediately to nab the driver and his assistant.They said that they will keep agitating till the perpetrators are brought to book. “The minor girl must get justice,” said a protestor.The happened on Sunday where the driver and his assistant gangraped the girl confining her inside the bus at night after arriving from Guwahati.
