Sadhana Das passes away

Sadhana Das (69 years), wife of a benevolent social worker of Jorhat Jiten Das has left her mortal body on 21st June, 2007 at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati. She has left behind her husband, her only son Mr. Jyotimoi Das and her two daughters along with many other relatives.

An eerie silence prevails in Byrnihat along the Assam-Meghalaya border a day after a group of miscreants killed an aged woman in the name of witch hunting.The incident took place at on Saturday night where a group of local youths dragged out the  septuagenarian woman Miri Turu of her home to be killed in the name of witch hunting.Later police have arrested the main accused Nayan Baptri who is being grilled by a team of policemen in Byrnihat police station.The incident took place hardly a month after the Assam legislative assembly cleared a legislation to stop witch hunting cases.

There is some let-up in the overall flood situation following a brief halt of the rains.The water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries stop raising following the halt of rains during the last 24 hours.The situation in Chirang and Kokrajhar districts also have started improving on Sunday. But the marooned people would have to stay in the relief camps for the next couple of days.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is on an aerial survey of Dhubri, Kokrajhar and Bongaigaon on Sunday to take stock of the flood fury in these districts.Gogoi has asked the officials to intensify relief and rescue operations in all the flood-hit districts.
Its official. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi voted for Nahid Afrin for the Indian Idol Junior Season II. In a statement issued to the media on Saturday, Gogoi said that the budding singer has been regaling the audience and viewers with her baritone voice bringing laurels to the state. He appealed to the people of the state to vote for the young singing sensation, who hails from Sonitpur district. He said votes will enable her to win the coveted singing show.
KMSS president Akhil Gogoi on Saturday came down heavily on Sarbananda Sonowal alleging that the Union minister has not been able to fight for Assam and its people. Gogoi called Sonowal a puppet saying that he lacks courage to take on Narendra Modi for his repeated injustice to Assam.Addressing a press conference, Gogoi said tthe Centre should help the state manage the crisis. “We need not dialogue in this hour of crisis. The need of the hour is a package,” said Gogoi. He further criticised the Centre for not clearing the appointment of Deven Buragohain as the gas cracker chairman.
Local residents in large number in Elengmari area launching an operation in search of the children and women who were washed away on Thursday night. Before that they did not allow the SDRF personnel to launch the search operation alleging inordinate delay. The local youths recovered the ill fated vehicle which met with the mishap when it was carrying a marriage party on Wednesday night before slipping into the flood waters. Four people escaped the death while 8 others went missing. On Saturday 5 bodies were fished out. The search is going on for the remaining bodies, mostly, the children.
Once again landslide wreaks no less havoc in Guwahati causing immense inconvenience for the people in the entry point of the city.Hundreds of vehicles have been remaining stranded on the Natonal Highway in Jorabat area where a huge hillock slipped on road the in the wee hours. It took several hours to clear the road.More landslides are feared in the area following the incessant rains that brought brimful misery for lakhs of people both in Assam and Meghalaya.
 Senior lawyers from the Gauhati High Court will meet the chief justice of India on Sunday to end the ongoing stalemate over the public interest litigation.The bar council members told reporters on Saturday that the nine member delegation from the high court will formally register protest over the acting chief justice’s move on the public interest litigation which was why, they have not been attending his bench for the last couple of days.
 Kamrup and Jorhat district administrations have suspended ferry service on the river Brahmaputra from Saturday.The services have been suspended for an indefinite period because of the rising water level that could wash away the ferries. The service would be restored after the fall of water level of the mighty river.The Brahmaputra has been flowing above the danger level following the incessant rains during the last couple of days where flood continues to wreak havoc in 19 districts.
