Sadhana Das passes away

Sadhana Das (69 years), wife of a benevolent social worker of Jorhat Jiten Das has left her mortal body on 21st June, 2007 at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati. She has left behind her husband, her only son Mr. Jyotimoi Das and her two daughters along with many other relatives.

Flood: Rajnath talks to Gogoi

Bodies yet to fish out

Despite vigorous rescue operation by SDRF team, there is no trace of the seven people who are feared to have met watery grave in Dhubri on Thursday.SDRF team finds it quite difficult to concentrate the search operation in the face of the strong flood currents in Elengi where the incident took place on Thursday afternoon.Three people have been rescued minutes after the incident where flood waters in Elengi washed away a vehicle carrying 11 people including 5 children from Bilasipara.

Car sale ban: Whose initiative

She is none other than Rita Das Mozumdar who moved the court seeking its intervention to stop the sale of small four wheelers without crash-test clearance.According to the advocate at the Gauhati High Court claims to have found that cars weighing up to 1,500 kg do not meet the specifications laid down by the Motor Vehicles Act. According to her, it amounts to a violation of the statute itself.The 50 year old Mozumdar owns a Hyundai Eon, Maruti Suzuki Ritz and Mahindra Xylo, filed a PIL contending that small passenger cars manufactured do not conform to safety standards.

Miscreants arrested in Udalguri

Army, police and para military forces arrested two miscreants during a combing operation in Udalguri on Thursday.Identified as Ramesh Chauhan and Luhit Chauhan, the duo were picked up from Bagarbari area in the evening.A factory made revolver was seized from their possession. A senior team of police officers has been interrogating the miscreants in Udalguri police station.

Assam second in offence against state

8 feared dead in Dhubri flood

Altogether 8 persons are feared dead when the vehicle carrying them in Dhubri washed away by flood waters on Thursday.The incident took place in Elengmari where strong water currents washed away the vehicle in the afternoon. Three persons managed to save their lives while eight others are still missing. The NDRF team deployed in the rescue operation has been finding it difficult in the face of strong currents. Rescue operations are going on.

Tremor strikes Dhubri, BTAD areas

A mild tremor created no less panic among the flood affected people in lower Assam districts on Thursday midnight.Originated along the Assam-Meghalaya interstate border the tremor struck at 12.51 midnight created panic among the flood affected people in Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Chirang and its adjacent areas.   

Disruptive landslide in Meghalaya

Massive landslide in Meghalaya continues to disrupt surface communication in the entire north eastern region on Friday.Hundreds of vehicles bound for Guwahati anf Silchar, Mizoram and Tripura have been remaining stranded for the last couple of days  at Ratachora on the East Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya where a huge hillock collapsed on the National Highway 6. More landslide has complicated the surface communication in Ratachora, Tansen and Kuliang keeping a major portion of the National Highway blocked.

Lawyers to move SC to end logjam

Senior lawyers in Gauhati High Court will send a delegation to the Supreme Court seeking the apex court’s intervention to break the PIL logjam. Talking to reporters at the court premises on Thursday senior lawyer Arup Borbra said that the need of the hour is the Supreme Court’s intervention to break the deadlock. For the fourth consecutive days the lawyers have been boycotting the bench of acting chief justice alleging his recent move on PILs.
