5 killed by wild elephants

In four separate incidents within 48 hours, 5 people have been killed by wild elephants in four places in Udalguri and Baksa district. The incidents have exposed massive and unabated encroachment and deforestation activities around India Bhutan border villages.The incidents have also reveal carelessness of educated people while dealing wild with animals. In the first incident,one Marshall Daimari (40) a small tea grower of Dimakuchi was killed at Tarkhuti village by a wild loner while he was unnecessarily chasing away a wild herd at 12.30 am on May 28. In the second incident one Babulal Gaur (38) of No.2 Sonajuli was killed by the same loner at 4.30 pm at the same place on May 28. In the third tragic incident Josinta Karmakar (35) and her daughter Shilla Karmakar (10) were trampled to death by wild elephants at NC Kherkheria village at 3-30 am on May 29.The victims were sleeping in their hut while killed. It has been reported that the victims family had been the illegal dweller inside the reserved forest near Bhutan India border. In the fourth incident another man belonging to Bodo community was killed by wild elephants near western boundary of Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary in Baksa district last night.

In the meantime large herds of wild elephants have started coming down to Udalguri villages from Bhutan hills looking for suitable place for delivering babies.Nature loving people and organizations including Elephants on the Line have urged BTC authority to ensure safety and security of both man and wild elephants.

A loner wild elephant killed one Lambrey Boro (45) killed and injutred Kathang Boro (38) on Wednesday night (April 20) at 7 PM at No.3 Bongurum in Udalguri district, near Bhutan border. Another girl Bibari Boro (16) escaped unhurt. They were returning home from a Sat Bihu feastival.
