Sea change in Cong poll candidates

As many as 70 per cent sitting Congress legislators will miss the assembly polls early next year. Age matters for 10 per cent of them while non performance and dissidence will matter for the remaining 60 percent sitting MLAs whom the party will not allow to contest.

According to an extensive political research conducted by Assam Times during the month of April this year, the party will field only the candidates with winning ability chance.

“Winning ability will definitely matter apart from the performance. But if performance is considered to the yardstick then 50 percent of the MLAs and minister will have to miss the bus. Party leadership have already taken it seriously,” said the research report.

Another factor that is bound the party leadership to step in with utmost care is dissidence. Ten per cent of the ministers and MLAs will have to pay heavy price.

“Ten MLAs are sure of losing the chance who have been doing dissidence to unseat Tarun Gogoi as chief minister. Five other dissident MLAs from upper Assam are not seeking Congress ticket in view of their possible migration to BJP,” said the report.

The research paper has marked 38 ministers and MLAs non performing while 24 MLAs and ministers have been marked as dissident. It further identified 15 legislators who are likely to miss the boat if age factor mattes before the Congress high command.

The news portal deployed  researchers in 126 assembly constituanties to be finalized by a team manned by 5 experts.

On the other hand, the APCC will not allow the general secretaries to contest time. The decision was finalized when PCC president Anjan Dutta and chief minister Tarun Gogoi met Congress high command in New Delhi on Friday.

NEW DELHI: Yet another acrimonious political controversy strikes Assam a day after Army Chief Bipin Rawat disclosed a link between AIUDF’s faster growth and influx of Muslim people in the country. AIUDF president Badaruddin Ajmal called the statement shocking and political.       The Lok Sabha MP in social media tweeted on Thursday,"General Bipin Rawat has made a political statement, shocking!," Ajmal said that the army chief has nothing to show any concern over a political party based on all democratic and secular values. He observed that utter misgovernance has given birth to the alternative parties like AIUDF and AAP.    “If you look at it, they have...
Till the other days they were AGP leaders which came to power since they signed the historic Assam Accord in Delhi. We are talking of Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and his one time cabinet colleague Chandra Mohan Patowary. Mahanta is still the regional party holding the same view on the Bangladeshi immigrant issue. Still he wants the immigrants irrespective of their religious beliefs be detected and deported from the soil of Assam. This is very simple. But his one time acolyte and cabinet collages has turned a political bete noire on the floor of the Assam Assembly which resumed its budget session on Monday. Both they targeted each others with facts and figures. The verbal duel started as soon as...
Top Congress leaders in New Delhi have been holding a series of meetings to finetune the candidates for the assembly polls. APCC president Anjan Dutta and poll panel chairman Kamal Nath along with Dr CP Joshi have been constantly meeting for the last two days. "The first list of candidates is ready. Party high command is expected to give the final seal of approval on Friday night. The list would be announced on Saturday," said a senior AICC leader in New Delhi. Ninety per cent sitting legislators are expected to contest this time. At least ten sitting MLAs are likely to shy away from contest because of age factor. "But they have been growing their family members to contest," said the...
Assam's well known Dispur Hospital marked the World Kidney Day on 10 March with various activities including a free kidney check-up camp for common people. Blows after blows seem to have awaited the Asom Gana Parishad 6 months before the assembly polls. AGP MLA from Dhakuakhana Naba Doley is believed to have been preparing to leave the regional party very shortly. His close associates told Assam Times that Doley has already got geen signal from the BJP leadership to join the party. He is expected to quit the regional party as soon as BJP leadership fixes his joining date. He is sure of ticket to contest the assembly polls early next year. The development assumes significance a day after his counterpart in Sootea constituency Padma Hazarika joined BJP who would be contesting from BJP this time. Hazarika would join BJP on October...
Simmering difference seems to have crippled Assam BJP unit hardly six months before the assembly polls. The party in rank and file are heading for a verticle split over the new president as Siddharth Bhattacharya’s tenure ends. Bhattacharya and his loyalists want extenion till the assembly polls while many others are dead opposed to it. But who will be the new president to lead the party in the assembly polls early next year?Bhattacharya is believed to have sought the extention in view of the assembly polls. Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma who is also learnt to have urged the central leadership to retain Bhattacharya as the state unit president triggering stiff resistance from many senior...
Former DHD-J militants seem to have been dominating the pre poll political landscape in Dima Hasao district of Assam much to a major concern for the common people. The former militants, mostly, belong to BJP who are going to form the executive body of the Dima Hasao Autonomus Council in a day or two. A few others are  believed to have been contemplating to join the party six months ahead of the assembly polls.Immediately after joining the mainstream, they contested the council polls independently promising a lot in 2013. But they have been failing to deliver the goods. These former militants, moslty, have of late, joined BJP at the full initiative of a former powerful Congress minister...
