Very happy to know that the association is continuing to do well and growing. I had the privilege of being the President of the association around 1981-82 when I was a Professor of IIT-Madras ( now Chennai). During Assam Movement, we published the Brahmaputra Beckons. Three persons were killed and atleast 20 others have been injured when a passenger bus collided its head on a tanker in Nagaon district. Crucial document relating to transaction of several crores along dozens personal computers have been ravaged when   the Dispur branch of Canara Bank caught fire on Sunday.            The fire broke out at 2pm and fire tenderpr arrived in the spot as soon as the smoke  were seen bellowing from the first floor of the bank beside the Ganesguri flyover.            Initial report suggested that the fire broke out due to electric short circuit which completely ravaged the fist floor.          Talking to assamtimes, the bank officials said that the lockers in the second floor was intact....
The opposition Asom Gana Parishad has given a 12 hour bandh call on Monday in protest against the Congress government's failure to deal with price rise and law and order breakdown.       AGP leaders told assamtimes that the statewide bandh would come into force from 5 on Monday morning to end at 5 in the evening.           On the other hand, the opposition party has exempted the essential services.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday reviewed the state's law and order situation at a meeting with top police and civil officials. Immediately after arriving in Guwahati, the chief minister invited IGP SN Singh and chief secretary Jitesh Khosla. Azara case and the pre poll violence in the Rabha Hasong areas figured in the review meeting. Gogoi further asked the duo to remain prepared for updating the NRC from next month.
Police got remand of 4 accused in the sensational Azara case where two women were gangraped and killed on October. Chief judicial magistrate remanded all the four accused for 7 days when they were produced before the court on Saturday afternoon. Then they were taken to Panbazar police station for further interrogation. On the other hand, a team of forensic experts have collected samples from the various spots to unearth the details of the case.
In a huge success, Dispur police have busted  a gang of thieves who are minor boys during an operation on Friday night.     A team of policemen managed to catch 16 thieves---of 9 to 15 years of age. Police further seized altogether 20 bicycles along with some gold ornaments.      The kingpin is a 9 years of age who is believed to have made huge revelations before. The identity of the two girls---believed to have been raped and kill in Azara seems to have surfaced. Two families have rushed to Azara police station to identify the bodies of the two girls who have been missing from Bidyapur in Bongaigaon from October 22. Guwahati police on Friday afternoon brought the four accused in the Azara case to the Panbazar police to intensify the  probe into it.     They were brought to the police station after a priliminary medical. Marathon interrogation is going on. All of them would be produced before the chief judicial magistrate seeking police remand. According to source, the accused confessed to have gangraped the two girls at a house on October 22.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi will ensure speedy probe into the Azara case to be tried in the fast track court. Talking to reporters in Delhi on Friday, Gogoi said that he would ask the authority to expedite the probe into the case where two girls were gangraped before being killed in Azara. Gogoi said that he would arrive in Guwahati to keep the process on track. Before that Gogoi held a crucial meeting with ministers Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, Akon Bora and Rockybul Hussain at the Assam Bhawan in Delhi.
