Very happy to know that the association is continuing to do well and growing. I had the privilege of being the President of the association around 1981-82 when I was a Professor of IIT-Madras ( now Chennai). During Assam Movement, we published the Brahmaputra Beckons. Two more youths were found dead at Jorabat in the outskirt of Guwahati on Monday. The semi-naked bodies were recovered from a culvert in the morning. Both the bodies bore some injury marks in the heads. Police investigation are going on.
Amid dewali pomp and gaiety, a youth was beaten to death in Guwahati on Sunday night. Identified as Pankaj Pathak, the youth was attacked by unidentified miscreants, probably followed by a road mishap at night. Pathak's body was found beside a temple in the morning. His bike was also found near the body.
Once again militants seem to have spread terror tentacles in Goalpara district bordering Meghalaya. Tension prevails in Chirang a day after unidentified miscreants kidnapped 4 persons of a family at gunpoint. The incident took place at North Khaitema village on Saturday wee hours when gunmen took away Tarun Basumatary, his wife and two sons at gunpoint. Two other childrens, however managed to escape from the scene. Search operation is in progress. But there seems to be hardly any breakthrough.
The Assam government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the recent incident in Azara where two women from Kokrajhar were found dead. The duo were believed to have died under mysteriour circumstances and the bodies were recovered beside the railway track at Jogipara in the outskirt of Guwahati. Additional district magistrate Biyaya Chaudhury would would probe the incident who is set to conduct a public hearing on November 8.

Intellectuals, journalists and a section of senior citizens staged dharna in front of the NEDFi Bhawan on Thusday boycotting a NHPC-sponsored seminar on the proposed big dams in Gerukamukh. As the seminar began, the prominent citizens and KMSS leaders thronged the NEDFi Bhawan premises at 10 in the morning and staged dharna opposing the dams. The brief silence is over. BTAD areas seem to have erupted in violence forcing the authority to clamp curfew on Thursday. Violence took its worse turn during the 24 hour lower Assam bandh on Wednesday demanding exclusion of Non Boro areas from BTAD. A string of group clashes marred the bandh call leaving two dead and several others injured. The clashes broke out in Baska when a group of people forced some shops to open. These have forced the administration to step up security in the entire Baska district.
Assam on Wednesday again pledged to give a brave fight against terrorism---of all forms when the state remembered with deep grief those died in the October 30 serial blast five years back. Participating at a tributery function under the Ganesguri flyover, chief minister Tarun Gogoi urged the people to stand united against terrorism. Hundreds of people led by Gogoi paid floral tributes to the departed victims in Ganesguri, Panbazar, Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar. On this day in 2008, over 100 people died in a string of blasts, allegedly masterminded by NDFB chief Ranjan Daimary.
