Sadhana Das passes away

Sadhana Das (69 years), wife of a benevolent social worker of Jorhat Jiten Das has left her mortal body on 21st June, 2007 at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati. She has left behind her husband, her only son Mr. Jyotimoi Das and her two daughters along with many other relatives.

Fuel crisis rerun in Manipur

Parts of Manipur start bearing the brunt of landslides, bandhs and blockades by United Naga Council. A fuel crisis is waiting to hit the restive north eastern state when the paralyzing bandh forced many trucks to remain stranded on the way to Imphal on the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway. The existing stock of petrol will not last more than four days and if these are allowed  continue then the state had no way but to grapple with the impending fuel crisis. Deports, mostly, in Imphal town and adjacent areas have been rationing for the last couple of days suggesting that the fuel crisis is waiting to rerun in the state.

Landslide on GS Road

Two incidents of landslides heavily disrupted surface communication on the Guwahati-Shillong Road for several hours on Saturday night.       The first incident of landslide took place in Jorabat area forcing many vehicles to remain stranded for several hours on Saturday night.Another landslide incident took place at 13th Mile area where a huge hillock collapsed on the highway. It took several hours for the workers to clear the road.      

Arithmetic crisis! No

Congress is not worried at all over the exodus of sitting MLAs. Talking to Assam Times on Saturday, senior party leaders said that the ruling has already roped in at least 30 MLAs to help the government survive the impending constitutional crisis. These MLAs include AUIDF, BPF and AGP.“We would survive the impending crisis even if 20 sitting MLAs resign. We have number. Ultras killed in Moreh encounter

Army claimed to have gunned down two insurgents at an encounter in Manipur on Saturday. The encounter took place in Moreh bordering Mynamar in the afternoon where the suspected militants died on the spot. Details are awaited. 

Cong in stop exodus effort

Stunned by the unofficial joining of 9 sitting MLAs, two AICC leaders are on a visit to Guwahati to assess the political situation.  Hours after the nine MLAs met Amit Shah, AICC leaders Dr CP Joshi and Abinash Pandey landed in Guwahati and held a series of meeting in the city to stop the exodus.Talking to reporter after a meeting, senior leader Pradyut Bordoloi said that Congress will not suffer if a group of opportunist quit the party.     

Minor raped in Sonapur: 2 held

Escalating protests seem to have failed to help the state stop rape and molestation cases. Yet another rape incident rocked the state on Friday. The victim is a minor girl in Sonapur area in the outskirt of Guwahati.The duo forcibly took the girl on Friday evening to be raped inside the vehicle and dumped at the roadside in the morning. Police arrested the culprits hours after the victim’s family members moved police with a complaint. Many local organizations demand exemplary punishment for the culprits. 

Uncertainty over joining date

Much to their utter disappoint, BJP central leadership has asked nine sitting Congress MLAs to contact state president Siddharth Bhattacharya who was not aware of the political development.According to sources, Bhattacharya received no information either from Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma who took the lead or from the central leadership. Khasi leaders meeting in Shillong

The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council is holding a huge meeting of the local heads at the Polo Ground in Shillong on Saturday to discuss the various issues confronting the indigenous tribes.The decision to hold the meeting was taken after the Council took serious note of the Meghalaya government’s move to draft a new Bill to empower the traditional institutions and heads.Later under mounting pressure, the government withdrew the ordinance and decided to move a new Bill.
