Thousands throng in Makhibaha Sabha Mahotsav

Thousands of devotees along with their well-wishers throng in Makhibaha Sabha Mahotsav, a century old socio-cultural & religious festival of northeast India, which was kicked-off last Sunday (26 February 2017). Held in six hundred years old village under Nalbari district in Assam, the festival will continue for nine days.

Organized annually by Makhibaha village-development committee at Harimandir premises, the unique fiesta witnesses various programs including rituals, cultural shows, public discourses etc along with brisk business activities. Each and every household of the large village contribute for the fair that gives them an opportunity to showcase their hospitality to guests.

Eminent Assamese author Dr Lakshminandan Bora inaugurated the festival after a spectacular cultural procession. The Saraswati and Sahitya Academy awardee Dr Bora appreciated the villagers for maintaining the spirit of Sabha Mahotsav and commented that the festivals help the society to grow with affection to each others.

Former Asom Sahitya Sabha president Padmashree Dr Bora also remembered few great personalities of Makhibaha locality and opined that the historic village has contributed immensely for the mainstream Assamese society since time immemorial.

The inauguration ceremony was also graced by Pratidin Time news channel editor Nitumani Saikia, Guwahati Press Club secretary Nava Thakuria, Gramonnyan president Harish Bhattacharya, active social workers and distinguished business community leaders.

It may be noted that Makhibaha is a confederation of villages giving shelter to different communities. The agricultural based village is surrounded by Bhojkuchi, Pakhura, Jalkhana Bhathuakhana, Nannatari, Bali, Haribhanga revenue villages.

The populous village is around 20 kilometer west of Nalbari district headquarter and around 70 km away from the State capital, Dispur. Its nearest railway station is Tihu (3.5 km away) and airfield is Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi international airport at the outskirt of Guwahati.

The Sabha Mahotsav will come to an end by 6 March, where few closing day programs are on the card. The annual festival creates brotherhood among the people helping them to live happily in the locality and also go to their professional activities with all positive energy for the days to come.

3 NDFB militants arrested

urity forces arrested three NDFB cadres in Guwahati on Wednesday night. The trio were picked up during a joint operation at the Inter State Bus Terminal in Guwahati and nabbed the militants on the way to Myanmar via Dimapur. Police said that the militants had used Guwahati as their transit base. They were identified as Laisui Basumutary, Joangsar Basumutary and Astomi Basumutary. CBI to probe rhino poaching

The Assam government has recommended CBI probe into the rhino poaching incidents that repeatedly rocks Kaziranga National Park. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday said that the state government had already written to CBI for probe into the recent rhino poaching incidents in KNP. He said that it might be a big political conspiracy into the big horn animal killings, where militants are also involved. The move came 24 hours after poachers killed ome more rhino in the word heritage site. Assam had lost at least 42 rhinos in 2012, where poachers killed 21 rhinos in KNP. In this year, poachers killed seven rhinos in Kaziranga.

ASPAC for police transparency

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday said that the Assam State Police Accountability Commission would be set up in several areas to ensure better public participation in accountability and transparency at various levels of police hierarchy.Gogoi told reporters in Guwahati that the panel now based in Guwahati will have a forum each in upper Assam, north bank of river Brahmaputra and Barak Valley in south Assam for the convenience of people. He said that the forums will be headed by a judge, he said, publicity will be given on the accountability initiative for public information and participation.

Blast: Narrow escape for passenger train

Hundreds of people had a narrow escape from a major incident, when a powerful blast took place in Gossaigaon minutes after the Howrah-Guwahati down Garibrath Express passed Goabari in Kokrajhar district. There was no casualty or injury.The bomb is believed to have been planted by the anti-talk faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland which exploded at 1:10 in the wee hours two minutes after the train passed the area between Gossaigaon and Fakiragram. But it blew up three feet of railway track and left a two feet deep crater at the spot.Train services were affected for about five hours following the incident and later it was restored. Gogoi moves PM over Chinese dam

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday moved Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh seeking his intervention in the construction of three dams on the upstream of the Brahmaputra. In a letter to the Prime Minster, Gogoi pointed out that though the Chinese Government had given assurance that they would take care of the interest of downstream areas, the State Government has apprehensions that it might affect the State.Gogoi in his letter said that the ‘entire Assam economy East is dependent on the Brahmaputra and that the construction of three new dams on the upstream of the river might affect the interest of the region in the downstream areas.

Sonaram Chutia cremated

The mortal remains of Sonaram Chutia consigned to flames in Joraht on Friday two days after the Vaishnavite scholar passed.Attended by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, the funeral function took place with full state honour at Tarajan in presence of thousands of his fans and well wishers in the afternoon.Before that in the morning thousands of people paid their last respect at the court field. Phensedyl cough syrup seized in Guwahati

Customs department officials in Guwahati seized 20,000 bottles of phensedyl cough syrup from a truck in on the way to Dhaka via Agatala. Around 200 bottles of phensedyl cough syrup worth Rs 20 lakh were seized at Lokhora from a truck from Punjab. The bottles were kept inside cartoons of beauty products to avoid police.

Criminals nabbed for breaking CJM court

In a bizarre incident that rocked the entire state, two criminals broke into the Morigaon district Chief Judicial Magistrate's court and stole files relating to criminal cases on Thursday night. Police arrested the duo on Friday.The windows were broken and 30 files were stolen to be thrown away in a nearby drain. One of the criminals Bimal Hazarika, however, left behind his wallet from where his driving license was found by police this morning. Police immediately tracked him along with his accomplice Asim Bordoloi and arrested them. The 30 files were recovered from the drain and returned to the court.
