Sir,

As citizens of this country we register our deep anxiety and distress at the proposed amendment of the Citizenship Act under consideration of the Joint Select Committee of Parliament. Whatever humanitarian consideration prompted the proposed amendment granting citizenship to persons belonging to minority communities namely Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, it is going to be highly inimical to the indigenous people of Assam and to the federal structure of the state.

At the moment, based on Assam Accord, at the intervention of the Supreme Court of India and on the instruction of the Central government, the Government of Assam is engaged in intensive updating of the National Register for Citizens (NRC) to include people permanently residing in the state till 24th March 1971 and to treat them alone as genuine citizens of the country.

The present attempt of the Central Government to extend citizenship beyond the cutoff date of 24th March, 1971 is not acceptable to the people of Assam. The state of Assam is already overburdened with high influx of foreign nationals from Bangladesh, causing serious economic and social distress and identity crisis for the indigenous communities of Assam. Under these circumstances, the proposed amendment poses an existential threat to the existing indigenous communities. 

In view of the above, we request you to withdraw the proposed amendment, or at the very least to exempt the state of Assam from the purview of the proposed amendment to the Citizenship Act.

Further, we request you to permit the people of Assam to submit their views in their own mother language in view of the fact that neither English nor Hindi is widely known among the indigenous communities of Assam.

Congress pins hopes on NYAY to woo voters

Guwahati: State Congress president Ripun Bora says if the party comes to power it would implement NYAY scheme where BPL families will receive Rs 7500 in a month. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Saturday, Bora NYAY will challenge Aronodoy scheme, which the government launched recently promising Rs 830 in a month to 17 lakh poor families.       Bora further said that the BJP-led government announced a slew of schemes despite bad financial condition just to woo the voters for 2021 assembly polls.

Guwahati: Sensing backlash in the upcoming assembly polls because its failure to ensure ST status for 6 ethnic communities, the Assam Government has announced three autonomous councils for 3 ethnic communities. State minister Chandan Brahma moved a bill for autonomous councils for Muttock, Moran and Koch Rajbanshi people which the assembly passed on Thursday. But the government, according to sources, is contemplating to appease the Ahom, Adivashi and Chutiya people since they were desperately struggling for ST status.

Bail for Devangana in Delhi

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted bail to Debangana Kalita three months after the police arrested the JNU researcher alleging involvement in the orgy of violence in the north eastern parts of the national capital. A bench of the court of Justice SK Kite, which heard the petition was not convinced by the evidence produced by Delhi police before the court justifying her arrest. Peasant body to float regional party

Guwahati: Yet another regional party will surface in the state’s pre poll political landscape. Spade works are gathering steam in the nook and corner of the poll bound state. No ambition for CM: Ajmal

Guwahati: Breaking his silence over the alliance with Congress to beat BJP in 2021 assembly polls, AIUDF president Badaruddin Ajmal denied any ambition for the Chief Minister’s job. Talking to a vernacular daily, Ajmal said that he has little hurdle to become Chief Minister but in the same breath he said that they have not formed the party to become CM.
