Sir,

As citizens of this country we register our deep anxiety and distress at the proposed amendment of the Citizenship Act under consideration of the Joint Select Committee of Parliament. Whatever humanitarian consideration prompted the proposed amendment granting citizenship to persons belonging to minority communities namely Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, it is going to be highly inimical to the indigenous people of Assam and to the federal structure of the state.

At the moment, based on Assam Accord, at the intervention of the Supreme Court of India and on the instruction of the Central government, the Government of Assam is engaged in intensive updating of the National Register for Citizens (NRC) to include people permanently residing in the state till 24th March 1971 and to treat them alone as genuine citizens of the country.

The present attempt of the Central Government to extend citizenship beyond the cutoff date of 24th March, 1971 is not acceptable to the people of Assam. The state of Assam is already overburdened with high influx of foreign nationals from Bangladesh, causing serious economic and social distress and identity crisis for the indigenous communities of Assam. Under these circumstances, the proposed amendment poses an existential threat to the existing indigenous communities. 

In view of the above, we request you to withdraw the proposed amendment, or at the very least to exempt the state of Assam from the purview of the proposed amendment to the Citizenship Act.

Further, we request you to permit the people of Assam to submit their views in their own mother language in view of the fact that neither English nor Hindi is widely known among the indigenous communities of Assam.

CM's stock taking meet on COVID19 sans Himanta

Guwahati : Assam chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had a stock taking video conference with all district authorities in the time of COVID-19. Sonowal asked Deputy Commissioners to take all possible measures to keep the killer virus at bay.  Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his junior minister Piyush Hazarika were conspicuous by their absence from the meeting on COVID-19. Sarma along with two senior cabinet ministers on Wednesday reviewed the situation and knockdown in Guwahati at a meeting with chief minister. The meetings assumed significance after Indian Medical Association and All Assam Medical Students Association alleged utter mismanagement of the menace.

IMA allege anomalies in Covid-19 management

Guwahati: The Indian Medical Association has strongly criticized the COVID19 care and management in Assam and suggested the government to formulate measures taking the medical experts into confidence. In a letter to health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma,  IMA's state unit alleged a number of anomalies in the system which why,  the number of infected doctors and health workers has gone up on every passing day. The association further questioned the government's intention on the violation of ICMR guidelines for home treatment of the asymptomic patients.

Prisoners stage dharna, demand Akhil's release

Guwahati: As many as 1200 prisoners at the Guwahati Central Jail staged sharna on Saturday demanding release of Akhil Gogoi whom the police arrested 7 months back in a number of cases. The prisoners thronged near the jail gate and started Sharna and shouted slogans raising their demands. No let-up in Baghjan inferno

There is no let up in the inferno at gas well in Baghjan which caught fire on Tuesday after ten days of blow out.  Around 1600 families in 1.5 km radius have been camping at safe distance and most of them alleged to have lost their houses in the inferno. Local residents have further alleged lost of paddy fields which won't be cultivable for the next many years. Firefighters dead in huge inferno at gas well

TINSUKIA: Two fire fighters died as they were trying to douse a huge inferno at a gas well in Tinsukia district on Tuesday even as the fury continues to spread out of control sending statewide shock and anger. The inferno took place on Tuesday when a team of experts brought from Singapore were trying to defuse smokes of gas bellowing from the gas well belonging to Oil India Limited at Baghjan. The technical snag took place on May 27 resulting in the gas blow out from the ill fated well forcing over 1700 families to be displaced in 3 km radius. Dhritiraj steals the march in HSLC exam

Guwahati: Dhritiraj Bastav Kalita from Barampur Jatiya Vidyalaya, a private school stole the show in the HSLC examination, 2020 conducted by the Secondary Board Education, Assam in February. Altogether 2221,957 cleared the examinations out of 3,42,224 across the state. Of them, 48,278 have secured first divisions while the remaining others have been placed in second and third division.
