Peace meet

A peace meeting was held at the conference hall of Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner here on Tuesday.

Organised by the district administration, the meeting was chaired by Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Madhav Prasad Sarma and was attended by senior officials from the civil and police, representatives from various political parties and organizations like Bodo Sahitya Sabha, ABSU, AASU, ABMSU, BSU,AKRSU, AAMSU,  civil society, BPF, BJP, UPPL,and local intellectuals. 

The meeting apprise about the prevailing law and order situation following the attack at Balajan Tinali market on Friday last where 14 people died and 18 others were injured.

The DC called upon all to maintain peace and harmony and also help the administration to maintain a peaceful atmosphere.He said district administration and state government has been initiating stern measures into situation. Government handed over ex gratia yo victims family member and given away financial supports to injured persons who are taking treatment in different hospitals, Sarma added.

The meeting was also attended by Kokrajhar  Superintendent of police Shyamal Prasad Saikia.
Saikia said the attack at Balajan Tinali was carried out by a single individual and no group is involved.  He said the militant who carried out the attack was heavily drunk and fired indiscriminately at the market place before he was gunned down, he added.

NDFB cadres lay down arms

More than sixteen hundred NDFB cadres today formally laid down arms. In a ceremony organised at GMCH auditorium in the presence of chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal 1615 cadres of the outfit submitted their arms before the government authority. Welcoming them to the mainstream chief minister Sonowal hoped that the Paresh Baruah-led ULFA(I) would follow the path of the NDFB. A few days ago the government signed a tripritite peace treaty with all the factions of the NDFB. In the treaty the Centre and state government, reportedly, promised to upgrade the BTAD as BTR.

Assam bandh against UTC in BTAD

Several organisations including AAKRASU and ABAMSU have reportedly, called a 12-hour-long Assam bandh on January27 in protest against proposed UTC for BTAD. These organisations are apprehensive that the Union government is going to upgrade the BTC as UTC. Already, they have warned the Union government to abdicate such move.

Resentment over proposed UTC in BTAD

Several organistions have expressed resentment over the Centre's move to upgrade the Bodo Territorial Council as Union Territorial Council. According to sources the Centre would soon sign a peace pact with the NDFB . In the pact upgradation of the BTC as a UTC would likely to take place, sources revealed. Opposing the move AKRASU, ABAMSU and many other organistaions of the BTAD have warned the Union government to abdicate such decision. These organisations have also termed the proposal as undemocratic.

Jr. engineer arrested in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR: One junior engineer posted at Kachugaon development block has been arrested by police for his alleged involvement with a massive financial scam. Archana Rongne (50), was picked up by the anti-corruption wing of the Assam police.
