Chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday made it plain and simple that his government wants 2014 voter list as one of the supportive documents to update the national registrar of citizens.

Responding to the legislators who asked him to clear his position, Gogoi said that the list would be required if the documents earlier announced by the Supreme Court are not available for an indigenous citizen.

He said that his government has already moved the Supreme Court for consideration which has not so far rejected the affidavit.

Mr. Tarun Gogoi is going mad because the assembly election of Assam is approaching. He is such a person who knows only vote bank politics. He is a useless Chief Minister of Assam who has no interest to protect the indigenous communities of Assam rather he is ready to protect the illegal Bangladeshis who entered illegally to our land. The vote bank politics of Congress in Assam will lead our state to be part of Bangladesh. Tarun Gogoi will sell Assam to Bangladesh and he along with his family will settlen down in London.

Senior journalist passes away

Senior journalist Satish Chandra Sharma passed away on Thursday. The 68-year long journalist who worked with United News of India for nearly four decades died at a local hospital where he was undergoing treatment for the past few days Sharma started his career at the Shillong bureau of UNI in the sixties decade of the last century. He went on to serve as bureau chief at Gwalior and Guwahati, before retiring from Ranchi in the same capacity in 2006. He held various important positions as a journalist, including being the president of Guwahati Press Club and Assam Union of Working Journalists. Pulin Das cremated

The mortal remains of Pulin Das consigned to flames on Thursday a day after the veteran sportsman  is no more. The veteran sportsman passed away on Wednesday. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi along with severa ministers, political leaders, parties and organizations paid their last respect before his body was cremated in the morning. Das breathed his last at  97 on Wedesday. The end came at 2 in the afternoon at the International Hospital in Guwahati where he was undergoing treatment. Japanese encephalitis claims 15

Japanese encephalitis starts wreaking havoc claiming 15 people so far forcing the government to step in. According to information, the victims include four children in the age group of two years to 15 years, and eleven adults in the affected districts. In a bid to contain the situation at the earliest, the health department preparing for preventive vaccination programmes across the state which will take time. The Centre is in constant touch with the state authorities to contain the situation.

Stage set for NRC update

 Decks are clear to update the National Register of Citizens. The centre has already approved the revised modalities for updating the NRC including the names of persons from the electoral rolls up to the midnight of March 24, 1971 and their descendents. This was what Union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju told Parliament on Wednesday. He said that the NRC 1951 would be updated by including the names of persons from the electoral rolls adding that the Centre has cleared Rs 140.58 crore has been released to the Assam Government. According to the minister, NRC update work has been targeted to be completed within three years.

Policeman missing in Baksa

Security forces in BTAD areas are on an intensified operation in search of Bitu Roy Brahma on Wednesday, 24 hours after the police constable went missing from Labdang guri in Baksa district. Brahma, the constable hailing from Kokrajhar posted at the Labdang gurioutpost has been missing since Tuesday morning. The incident took place hardly a week after suspected NDFB-S militants killed four lemon traders in Baska district sending shock and anger across the BTAD areas. .   

Mahanta sticks to resignation

 Prafulla Kumar Mahanta made it plain and simple that he won’t take back the resignation he tendered as party president on Monday. Senior AGP leaders told Assam Times that despite requests from a circle of senior party leaders, the two time chief minister refused to do it. According to them, a circle of party leaders and workers blamed it all on Mahanta for the recent poll debacle. They want Mahanta to quit the post of party president. “That’s why, Mahanta sticks to his stand,” said a few close associates of the founder party president.   

AGP divided over Mahanta’s quit

 A divided AGP on Tuesday failed to take the final call on Prafulla Kumar Mahanta’s resignation as party president. Mahanta’s close associates wanted him to stay citing collective responsibility for the recent Lok Sabha poll debacle while another circle of party leaders strongly advocated change of guard.    The general assembly of the party which met at its headquarters in the evening resolved to take a decision after a series of consultation with district level workers. JINTUL TALUKDAR, BAKSA: Baska police have picked up one more person on Tuesday in connection with the recent incident where suspected NDFB-S militants four local lemon traders. According to information, the person who was arrested on Tuesday morning is believed to have helped the Bodo militants kidnapped the local traders to be killed.  Police on Monday arrested three linkmen for helping militants. On the other hand, the authorities have lifted the curfew during the day time from Tuesday. 70 fall ill for food poisoning

 Over 70 people are undergoing treatment in Jorhat after they consumed gram and pulse served at a ritual ceremony on Monday forcing Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Solanki Vishal Vasant has ordered an enquiry into the incident. The ritual ceremony was organized at Alengmora Khutiaputa area under Pulibor police station where 70 people including   23 children took ill after consuming 'prasad' on Tuesday. Local residents told Assam Times that these people complained of severe stomachache and vomiting hours after they consumed grams and pulse. They were rushed to the Solmora Primary Health Centre and later shifted to the Jorhat Medical College Hospital.

No hike in potato-onion prices!

There would be no immediate hike in the prices of onion and potatoes. Food and civil supplies department sources told Assam Times that the trucks carrying potatoes and onions bound for Assam and its neighbouring states are leaving West Bengal after the government intervention. Food and civil supplies minister Dr Nazrul Islam apprised chief minister Tarun Gogoi of the entire situation on Monday. Gogoi asked Dr Islam to keep a strict vigil on the prices of potato and onion in the market.
