Caught in a crucial juncture police have arrested SPO secretary Mritunjoy Bora on Tuesday hours before their organization was to start fast unto death in the city.According to information, police have arrested Bora from Paltanbazar in the wee hours as he was preparing to organize the strike at Dihgalipukhuri raising their demands. But the remaining officials are still firm on their demands saying that they will proceed.
Over 30 people had a narrow escape in Guwahati when the bus carrying them stopped just before overcoming a portion of a flyover which developed a huge crack on Tuesday.It took place in the morning when the driver of the bus from Dibrugarh stopped as he came to spot the huge crack in the middle of the flyover at Eightmile area just a stone’s throw distance from Khanapara. At least four persons died and over 20 others sustained serious injury at a road accident in Sonitpur district on Monday.The incident took place at Borgang near Bihali in the wee hours where a Tata Magic vehicle carrying over 25 people from a function at Bharakuli was on its way to Bedeti. As the vehicle reached Borgang, it suddenly collided head on a truck which was coming from the opposite direction amid incessent rains. Three people of a family died in a clash along the Assam-Meghalaya border sending shockwaves across the state on Monday.The gory clash took place at Phulbari on Sunday evening where a youth hacked to death his maternal uncle following a family clash. Identified as Khairul Islam, the youth was arrested by police hours after he Minaruddin Ahmed with a sharp knife. An uneasy calm grips Lumding railway station where the northeast frontier railway authorities have halted several passenger trains for repairing of tracks.Thousands of passengers have been waiting for the trains to leave for the destination from Sunday morning. Station officials told Assam Times that emergency repairing of the tracks are in progress and it would be completed by Monday. “From Monday the trains would be able to leave the station,” said the station officials. “We don’t understand why the train is not allowed to move. Surface communication from Bandordewa to Itanagar remains disrupted following the massive landslide in Arunachal Pradesh Sunday.The landslide took place at Kachengmara where a portion of the National Highway No 51-A collpased on Sunday morning following incessant rains during the last couple of days. Hundreds of trucks carrying essential commodities and other vehciles have been remaining standred since Sunday morning. “Steps are on to restore surface communication between Bandordewa and Itanagar. We hope that we would be able to do these within the next couple of days,” Arunachal Pradesh authorities told Assam Times.
