Brisk polling is what undergoing in Barpeta constituency along with five others in the last and third phase of General elections on Thursday.

Heavy turn out of voters is expected in this crucial constituency where 14,24,638 voters are expected to exercise their franchise in 1906 booths which will continue till 5 in the evening.

Sitting MP and Congress candidate Ismile Hussain is facing a keen contest with AIUDF candidate Sirajuddin  Ajmal while BJP candidate Chandra Mohan Patowary and his AGP rival and former party colleague Phani Bhushan Chaudhury have been enjoying no less popularity and support.      

Counting will take place on May 16.

In a setback for the Raijor Dal and its supporters, Supreme Court of India has rejected the bail plea of Akhil Gogoi, on Thursday. The KMSS leader and the president of the Raijor Dal moved the SC challenging the reject order passed by the Guwahati High Court. Hearing the plea earlier today, a three-judge bench of the SC comprising of Justice NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Aniruddha Bose denied bail to the activist. In a horrific incident, a 40-year old man was lynched in a village of Karbi-Anglong on Sunday night. As per reports, a mob of some villagers brutally assulted a man to death. The victim was identified as Monsing Rongpi. He was a resident of  the Karashi Bey village under the Bakalia police station. The mob first took him to a football field where they tied him to a goalpost before beating him mercilessly. Due to the assult, Rongpi died at the spot, reports said. Guwahati: Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched distribution of Rs 240 crore to over 7 lakh tea garden workers at a function in Guwahati on Saturday. Guwahati : AJP and Raijor Dal will fight the upcoming assembly polls jointly. This was what the leaders of both the regional parties told media in Guwahati on Friday.  AJP president and Raijor Dal leader Bhaskar De Saikia said that they would maintain equidistance with AIUDF, Congress and BJP.  They further said that never they would have any patch up with any national party and that they would keep doors open for the regional parties.  Lyrinjyoti Gogoi and Jagadish Bhuyan called on Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi at GMCH on Thursday where both the new regional parties struck deal.

Guwahati: AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi and general secretary Jagdish Bhuyan visited Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi in Guwahati on Thursday amid the speculations of the move to forge alliance to fight against BJP and Congress. Diphu: There is no breakthrough in the food poisoning case in Diphu 2 days after a BJP worker died and over 130 fell ill when they consumed packet launched served at a government function.
