Very happy to know that the association is continuing to do well and growing. GUWAHATI: Senior police officer Kuladhar Saikia will take over as director general of police on Monday. The special director general Saikia will take charge from Mukesh Sahay who is going on retirement on that day. Saikia, the 1985 batch IPS officer is also an award winning Assamese litterateur who received the coveted Sahitya Akademy Award.
Guwahati: The media fraternity will remember journalist Simanta Bhagawati, who passed away on 21 April in a city hospital following a massive stroke, in a meeting to be held at Guwahati Press Club on Friday next. It may be noted that Simanta, 53, was also a sportsman and faced the stroke on 19 April while playing tennis at a city court. He was associated with The Assam Tribune till May last year. A man of humour, Simanta leaves behind his wife and a daughter with other relatives and well-wishers. ITANAGAR: Three army jawans died and four others sustained serious injury when the vehicle on which they were travelling met with a mishap in Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday. The mishap took place in the morning at Dibang Valley as the army jawans based in Sapakhowa in Sadiya were travelling in the neighbouring north eastern state. Three jawans died on the spot while four others have been undergoing treatment at the army based hospital.
Kokrajhar:: The police have arrested eight persons a day after killed a person and injured a woman in the name of witch hunting incidents in Chirang and Baska districts sending statewide shock and anger.The victim in Chirang is an elderly person who was killed by a group of villagers accusing him of indulging in witchery. Guwahati: City based senior scribe Simanta Bhagawati, who was associated with The Assam Tribune, passed away this (Saturday 21 April) morning. A popular media columnist and also fond of tennis, Simanta faced a massive stroke two days back while he was playing in a city court. His cremation is scheduled to take place this afternoon. LAKHIMPUR: In yet another shocking incident, five miscreants gangraped a 14 year old girl before dumping on the roadside in Lakhimpur on Thursday. The incident took place in Dalhat where local resident rescued the victim in the critical condition in the wee hours. Now she is battling for life at the hospital.
