Khasi leaders meeting in Shillong

The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council is holding a huge meeting of the local heads at the Polo Ground in Shillong on Saturday to discuss the various issues confronting the indigenous tribes.

The decision to hold the meeting was taken after the Council took serious note of the Meghalaya government’s move to draft a new Bill to empower the traditional institutions and heads.

Later under mounting pressure, the government withdrew the ordinance and decided to move a new Bill. The meeting is expected to discuss the extension of the building bye-laws jurisdiction in scheduled areas.
