Kati Ram Nath: a tribute

A 75 years old LP school teacher of a remote village, Nizdola in Udalguri district,who had been moving from village to village armed with all his hand made scientific gadgets,trying to make children understand science and machines passed off silently in his village unnoticed by so called civilized society on October 28 2011. Born on October 1941 late Kati Ram Nath had joined service as an LP school teacher at Kalikhola LP school in 1961 and was retired from service on September 30 in 1999 as the headmaster of Binapani Nizdola LP school.Kati Ram Nath had never been wanting to confined himself within the walls of his home rooms and children,rather he thought that his mission was to make science popular among village children. He successfully developed a bamboo made rikshaw in 1957 followed by a bamboo made bi-cycle in 1967.


Among his working models two bamboo made bi-cycles,model showing days and nights,hand made compass,solar and lunar eclipse models,solar system,calculators,silk woven hand made machine and rice thrasher are worth mentioning. Other models like replica of Tajmahal and Saraighat bridge were simply marvelous.Kati Ram Nath had won several prestigious awards in his life including- State Teachers Award in 1990;awards by All Assam Primary Teachers Association in 1966; Udalguri district Excellence Award in Public Service in January,2009 etc. He also wrote two books namely- 'Jene Kukur tene tangon' and 'Kuhi Path Sahayika' in 1984.A few days back before is death,he told media persons that he could have done more if had been encouraged by government officials and politicians. Noted writer cum Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri district Thaneswar Malakar has expressed his deep condolence at the sudden death of the silent science worker on October 29,2011. Kati Ram Nath left behind his wife Ambika Devi,three sons namely-Nripen, Lkahikanta, Jadumoni and two daughters Pratibha and Anima.Let us pray God to grant eternal peace to the departed soul of Kati Ram Nath.

Protesting against sharp price rise of essential commodities in the country,more than five hundred people mostly woman staged dharna in front of Kalaigaon Revenue Circle Office today on September 2 at 11 am on the day of Bharat Bandh.The protesters blocked the main gate of Kalaigaon Revenue Circle Office preventing government officials and employees including Additional Deputy Commissioner Udalguri.
