Car lifters apprehended at Kamargaon
NH-39 was once the safe passage for car lifters to whisk away the stolen vehicles. But due to constant vigilance on the highway by NRL Police Out Post, the car lifters are now shifted their attention to an alternate route. Now the safe and favourite passage of the car lifter is NH-37. From Komargaon they comes to Golaghat via Khumtai, from where they proceed to Dimapur. This matter came to focus when Komargaon Police arrested two car lifters namely Asiisalew and Ashuliloshaii, both hailing from Manipur along with a stolen Santro car bearing registration no. WB-38/V-3699, on the night of 19th May. The car lifters were on their way to Dimapur when the stolen Santro met with an accident in Komargaon area on NH-37 and a team of village defence party arrived on the spot. Suspecting the duo of some ulterior motives they were interrogated extensively and when asked to produce the relevant documents of the car, the cat was out of the bag. They confessed of having stolen the Santro from Durgapur City of West Bengal on 7th May. Today a seven member team from Durgapur Police, led by ASI S.K. Samanta arrived at Golaghat and took possession of the stolen vehicle and also took the car lifters into their custody. While talking to Eastern Chronicle, Samanta said that within a span of One year they had recovered five stolen vehicles in Assam including this one. He further added that the convenient time for car lifters to get away is 4 to 8 am in the morning as the presence of police during those hours sparse. Meanwhile the car lifters were taken to Durgapur for further investigation. A case has already been registered in Durgapur Police Station bearing case no. 170/11, under section 379 of IPC.
