Project Mission Green Udalguri launched


In order to carry forward on a sustainable basis eco-conservation, environment protection and sustainable development across the length and breadth of human habitation, based upon the salient values of co-existence with nature, the district administration of Udalguri in association with Dhansiri Forest Division, Udalguri, a new programme called “Mission Green Odalguri” was formally launched on July 26 at Udalguri at 9 am with day long programme. A colorful rally of more than 1500 people marked the beginning of launching of the mission.The “Green Rally” which had jointly been flagged of by SS Meenakshi Sundaram,DC,Udalguri and AP Tiwari SP ,Udalguripassed through the streets of Udalguri town covering a distance of 4 km. Defying pouring rain, members of ABSU, AJYCP, AASU, AMSU, AAGSU, AKRSU, holding play cards and banners in hands and accompanied by DC and SP of the district walked from Bishnu Rabha Auditorium to DCs parade ground.where floral tribute was paid to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi before the open session at 11 am.


K.Talukdar,ADC,Udalguri in his inagural speech welcomed all the guests and participants, saying that people of Udalguri must be famous as planters but not otherwise as cutters. The district administration felicitated a few distinguished persons and members of various organizations on the occasion with gamocha and aarnai. Bankim Sarma, DFO,Dhansiri Division administered the oath taking ceremony for the conservation of nature and wild life. He thanked district administration and ABSU etc for offering all kinds of help and cooperation for coming out to save nature and wildlife of the district.He said that the district required 375 truckloads of fire wood monthly for cooking purposes only. thereby destroying more and more forests.Plantation of more and more trees could alone save remaining forests ,he said. Nerkhang Khaklari,district ABSU secretary in his speech admitted that enough damages had been done to the nature in the district. He assured that ABSU would left no stone unturned to protect remaining green cover and wildlife of the district. Karendra Basumatari,MLA,Mazbat LAC also addressed the participants .He declared that he would introduce a new bill in the assembly for the creation of a new force called “Green Defence Force” for the protection of nature and wildlife of Assam. Col.Sunil Upadhyay,commanding Oficer of 315 Field regiment (KARGIL) declared that Red Horns Division would offer an amount of rupees ten lakhs for the establishment of a forest park at Udalguri to motivate and educate children of the district. MP Sarma,Project Director,DRDA,Udalguri also spoke a few words on the occasion.


SS Meenakshi Sundaram,DC,Udalguri who presided over the session while addressing the participants explained about the “Mission Green Odalguri”project. According to him the mission was envisaged as a community based peoples movement for afforestation and conservation activities in the district involving common citizen,social organizations,NGOs, forest department, students organizations ,various government organizations including Army, SSB, Police, IRBN etc. He further said that the programme would be financed by government of India,Assam government, Bodoland Territorial Council,various philanthropic organization and contribution from public.He further said that district,sub-divisional and block level committees would be formed under the mission. Moreover “Enviroclubs” would also be formed in various schools in the district.

Protesting against sharp price rise of essential commodities in the country,more than five hundred people mostly woman staged dharna in front of Kalaigaon Revenue Circle Office today on September 2 at 11 am on the day of Bharat Bandh.The protesters blocked the main gate of Kalaigaon Revenue Circle Office preventing government officials and employees including Additional Deputy Commissioner Udalguri.
