4 killed in Barpeta police firing
Four people died and over 50 others have been injured when police opened fire on a group of student protesters trying to stall government proceedings of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Barpeta on Wednesday.
According to information, over 10,000 protesters led by leaders of the All Assam Minority Students' Union went on the rampage on in Barpeta town demanding cancellation of the NRC pilot project.
Senior police officials said the mob turned violent and started vandalism, attacking shops and private vehicles and tried storming the district magistrate's office. Initially, police resorted to lathicharge and then opened fire in the air before firing on the crowd to disperse them. Three protesters were killed and 50 injured in the police action whilke another seruously injured people died on the way to GMCH along with others.

The people of Barpeta have been suffering tremendously for the erratic supply of electricity in the last few days. The supply is disrupted without any prior notice and this continues for a long period of time. The worst sufferers are the students community, industries, educational institutions etc.
Barpeta police seized one loaded truck log at Nagaon, about 10 km away from the town last night at about 2 pm. According to report said, the police visited various places of Barpeta last night and when they reached near Nagaon they found the truck on the road and they seized truck. The driver of the truck Rezzak Ali informed that these logs are coming from Nuntola of Saorbhog (to Bahari Saw mill) and the owner of this is Banjit Das of Barpeta. The cost of seized log is about Rs.1 lakh.
