4 killed in Barpeta police firing

Four people died and over 50 others have been injured when police opened fire on a group of student protesters trying to stall government proceedings of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Barpeta on Wednesday.


According to information, over 10,000 protesters led by leaders of the All Assam Minority Students' Union went on the rampage on in Barpeta town demanding cancellation of the NRC pilot project.


Senior police officials said the mob turned violent and started vandalism, attacking shops and private vehicles and tried storming the district magistrate's office. Initially, police resorted to lathicharge and then opened fire in the air before firing on the crowd to disperse them. Three protesters were killed and 50 injured in the police action whilke another seruously injured people died on the way to GMCH along with others.

The Mobile Health Unit under NRHM was opened here at Barpeta today to provide the health service to the deprived people of the district. Two dacoits were killed in an encounter at Jalakura bridge at Keotkuchi, about 4 km from Barpeta yesterday night. According report, a group police personnel headed by the ASP, DSP and TSI of Barpeta got information about the dacoits and they are awaiting for them at that place. As soon as they arrived the police try to catch them, but the encounter took place between the police and the dacoits. As a result two dacoits were killed and other fled away. The DSP of Barpeta Sushanta Biswa Sarma with the police personnel of Barpeta and Kalgachiya i/c recovered fake notes worth Rs.11500 of 500 denominations from a one Alam Ali of Madrasapara of Kokila outpost in Barpeta district yesterday.
