Flood waters hit Kalaigaon

The sudden waves of flood waters of Noa river badly hit Kalaigaon town on the morning of July 9,causing havoc in many areas namely No.2 Kalaigaon,Dengubasti Sagunbahi ,Gerua etc. The flood waters receded in the afternoon but fresh waves of flood waters of hit back again at 5 am in the morning of July 10,submerging several places. Knee deep flood waters disrupted normal vehicular traffic at several places on K.R. ( Kalaigaon–Rangamati ) PWD road and Ojagaon – Kalaigaon PWD road. The flood waters had also damaged the said two roads at several points. Institutions premises namely Kalaigaon Girls High School. Bridge Course Residential School, Vocational Training Centre of Kalaigaon Sevashram were submerged in knee deep flood waters.

A portion of embankment measuring more than 100 meters had been washed away at Gerua-Sagunbahi villages on the western bank of the river Noa causing flood in the nearby villages. According to the people of the said villages substandard works done by contractors and VCDCs had been the cause of the damages. The flood waters of Gerua river washed away both the approaches of the temporally build PWD bridge on Ojagaon-Kalaigaon PMGY road (2007-08) at Ranthali Bagicha village near Kalaigaon stadium on the morning of July 10,disrupting all kinds of traffic. According to a few leading people of the locality the estimated cost of the work was more than six crores of rupees. The work order was allotted to one Pradip Das of Guwahati, who in turn entrusted the work to a few local sub contractors. In the absence of necessary supervision the standard of the work had been far below. They also alleged that very low standard materials had been used in the construction work and a huge amount of public money would be misappropriated in the process. A delegation of the people met the Circle Officer, Kalaigaon demanding strong action against the culprits. They also decided to meet the DCs of both Darrang and Udalguri district seeking justice in the matter.
