Assam Don Bosco University Celebrates 12th Convocation, Honors Outstanding Graduates

Guwahati, 23 September 2023: Assam Don Bosco University celebrated its 12th Convocation on Saturday, 23rd September, 2023, at Tapesia Campus Sonapur, Guwahati. The esteemed gathering included the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, who graced the occasion as the university's visitor, along with Vice Chancellor Fr. (Dr) Jose Palley, Pro Vice Chancellor Fr. Joseph Nellnatt, Directors of Schools, Heads of Departments, faculty members, students, and dignitaries from across the country.

Addressing the graduating students, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria encouraged them to contribute meaningfully to society, emphasizing the importance of innovation and dedication in shaping a better India. He applauded the successful implementation of the New Education Policy 2020 (NEP) by the University and acknowledged their efforts in teacher training and curriculum restructuring.

The Hon’ble Chancellor, Fr. Januarius Sangma, urged the graduates to view the world as an open canvas for their aspirations and emphasized the vital role they play in the nation's future, linking it to environmental stewardship and sustainability.

In his welcome address, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Fr. (Dr) Jose Palely, congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to embrace change, maintain passion for their pursuits, and uphold the values instilled during their academic journey.

A total of 1286 students were conferred degrees, with 555 receiving bachelor's degrees and 731 receiving master’s degrees across various disciplines. Additionally, 23 scholars were awarded doctoral degrees. The Global Online and Distance Education Programme saw 134 students receive degrees and 6 students obtain diplomas, attracting participants from around the world.

Notably, 36 outstanding graduates were awarded gold medals for their exemplary academic performance. The Chancellor’s and Vice Chancellor’s medals were presented to the top graduates in postgraduate and undergraduate courses, respectively. Special awards, including the ‘Father Stephen Mavely Gold Medal’ and ‘Shri JN Bawri Memorial Medal of Distinction’, were introduced, recognizing exceptional talent and commitment in academics, social roles, and extracurricular activities.

The convocation culminated with the closure announced by the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, followed by the National Anthem, marking a momentous conclusion to Convocation 2023.

Attack on NDFB designated camp

An irate mob in Dhekiajuli vandalized NDFB’s designated camp hours after Sonitpur additional S Guljar Hussian and a policemen were killed in an encounter at Haulangi on Tuesday.Local residents in large number came out the street and thronged the NDFB designated camp. A section of the people attacked several pro talk militants while some others vandalized the designated camp.Later security forces rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Stern action against NDFB-S

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday ordered intensified action against NDFB-S militants after they killed Sonitpur’s additional SP Guljar Hussain and a policeman at an encounter in Dhekiajuli in the morning.Talking to reporters at the Assam Assembly secretariat in Dispur, Gogoi said that the government won’t allow the Bodo militant outfits to carry out any attack further.

Happy to represent Assam

Rajya Sabha poll candidate Dr Sanjay Singh said that he would be happy if he is given a chance to represent Assam in the Rajya Sabha.Talking to reporters in the Assam Assembly secretariat after filing his nomination as the first choice candidate, Dr Singh said  that he would always raise his voice in the Rajya on behalf of Assam and its people. 

We will win RS poll: CM

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is confident that the ruling party would be able to win the three Rajya Sabha polls.Talking to reporters after filing of nomination papers by Sanjay Singh and Bhubneswar Kailta at the Assam Assembly secretariat on Tuesday, Gogoi that they have every strength to win the polls.He added that he was happy to have Dr Singh as the Rajya Sabha MP from the state.

Bomb blast in Sivasagar

A powerful grenade explosion has left one person injured in Sivasagar town on Tuesday.The explosion took place at a house in Station Chariali at around 11 in the morning. Identified as Raju Ali, the injured has lost one of his hands under the impact of the explosion.The bomb was believed to have been brought to explode on the Republic day and was kept inside the house.Security forces rushed to the spot and sent the injured Ali to the Assam Medical College Hospital.         

Singh files nomination

Despite widespread resentment in the rank and file of Congress, Sanjay Singh filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha poll slated for February 7.Singh submitted his nomination papers in presence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita along with several ministers and Congress leaders before returning officer Gauranga Prasad Das. Singh is the party’s first choice candidate.

Kalita third choice

APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha polls and the third choice candidate on Tuesday.Kalita filed his nomination in presence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, parliamentary affairs minister Nilomoni Sen Deka, Rekibuddin Ahmed, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma along with several ministers and Congress leaders before returning officer Gauranga Prasad Das.However, Kalita’s safe passage meets with increasing difficulties as the Opposition camp is fielding Haidor Hussain a consensus candidate.

Addl SP killed in encounter

An additional superintendent of police was among two were killed in an encounter with NDFB-S in Sonitpur district on Tuesday.The encounter took place at Batashipur in Dhekiajuli along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh interstate border where additional SP Guljar Hussain and a policeman were killed. At least 6 other policemen were injured and they were shifted to the nearest hospital.Hussain has left behind a 3-year-old daughter and a 15 days old infant son.

Bombs seized in Goalpara

Goalpara police seized five crude bombs from a house on Tuesday.The bombs were kept inside a house to be recovered during an operation conducted acting on the confessional statements of the ULFA militant recently captured in Guwahati.
