Assam Don Bosco University Celebrates 12th Convocation, Honors Outstanding Graduates

Guwahati, 23 September 2023: Assam Don Bosco University celebrated its 12th Convocation on Saturday, 23rd September, 2023, at Tapesia Campus Sonapur, Guwahati. The esteemed gathering included the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, who graced the occasion as the university's visitor, along with Vice Chancellor Fr. (Dr) Jose Palley, Pro Vice Chancellor Fr. Joseph Nellnatt, Directors of Schools, Heads of Departments, faculty members, students, and dignitaries from across the country.

Addressing the graduating students, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria encouraged them to contribute meaningfully to society, emphasizing the importance of innovation and dedication in shaping a better India. He applauded the successful implementation of the New Education Policy 2020 (NEP) by the University and acknowledged their efforts in teacher training and curriculum restructuring.

The Hon’ble Chancellor, Fr. Januarius Sangma, urged the graduates to view the world as an open canvas for their aspirations and emphasized the vital role they play in the nation's future, linking it to environmental stewardship and sustainability.

In his welcome address, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Fr. (Dr) Jose Palely, congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to embrace change, maintain passion for their pursuits, and uphold the values instilled during their academic journey.

A total of 1286 students were conferred degrees, with 555 receiving bachelor's degrees and 731 receiving master’s degrees across various disciplines. Additionally, 23 scholars were awarded doctoral degrees. The Global Online and Distance Education Programme saw 134 students receive degrees and 6 students obtain diplomas, attracting participants from around the world.

Notably, 36 outstanding graduates were awarded gold medals for their exemplary academic performance. The Chancellor’s and Vice Chancellor’s medals were presented to the top graduates in postgraduate and undergraduate courses, respectively. Special awards, including the ‘Father Stephen Mavely Gold Medal’ and ‘Shri JN Bawri Memorial Medal of Distinction’, were introduced, recognizing exceptional talent and commitment in academics, social roles, and extracurricular activities.

The convocation culminated with the closure announced by the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, followed by the National Anthem, marking a momentous conclusion to Convocation 2023.

A brainstorming meeting of the Assam Congress poll panel on Monday will form panels of ticket aspirants for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.To be attended by chief minister Tarun Gogoi and PCC president Bhubneswar Kalita, the meeting is scheduled to take place at 3-30 in the afternoon at the Hotel Greenwoood Resort in Khanapara.The meeting will examine the findings of the observers sent to each of the Lok Sabha constituencies.  

RS: AGP holds crucial meet

Hectic confabulations grip the Asom Gana Parishad for the Rajya Sabh polls.There seems to hardly any chance for the regional party. But the party legislative body is holding a crucial meeting at its headquarters on Monday to discuss the political scenario.Both AIUDF and AGP have been trying to rope in BJP. But of no avail. BJP has given the ruling party an easy walk over citing lack of strength.

Daimary files nomination

Rajya Sabha MP from BPF Biswajeet Daimary has filed his nomination papers on Monday seeking reelection to the Upper House with the help of Congress.Accompanied by BPF president Hagrama Mohilary and Deputy BTC chief Khampha Borgayari, Daimary filed his nomination at 11-30 in the morning before the returning officer Gauranga Prasad Das in Dispur.His term will expire on April 13 along with Bhubneswar Kalita from Congress and Birendra Prasad Baishya from AGP.

Stalemate over third choice

Assam Congress has agreed to field Bhubneswar Kalita as the first choice candidate for the upcoming Rajjya Sabha polls. CLP meets on LS polls

Assam Congress legislators are holding a meet to chalk out a slew of strategies to put up an outstanding performance in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.The brain storming meet began at 11-30 in the morning at the legislators’ conference in the Assembly House premises.   Grievances of a section of legislators are unlikely to figure in the meeting to be presided over by chief minister Tarun Gogoi. Gogoi apprised his fellow legislators of the outcome of the meeting with party vice president Rahul Gandhi.

Amid stalemate over the Rajya Sabha candidates, Congress high command is all set to field a New Delhi based political leader to one of the seats.  Top sources told Assam Times that Congress president Sonia Gandhi wants former MP Sanjay Singh’s election to the Rajya Sabha.A circle of powerful AICC leaders has arrived in Guwahati convince chief minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita.Singh is likely to file nominations on Monday afternoon. But the party has yet to finalise the remaining candidate even after allowing BPF to contest for one of the seats.

AICC move irks APCC

Utter disappointment seems to have gripped the Assam Congress legislators after the AICC has recommended Sanjoy Singh’s name for the Rajya Sabha membership from the state.Nobody has disclosed their disappointment in public. But sources told Assam Times that the APCC in rank and file are dead opposed to the move to elect a candidate from UP who was closed to Rajiv Gandhi.On the other hand, the party has yet to disclose the name of the third choice candidate for the Rajya Sabha polls slated for February 7. According to sources, either Bhubneswar Kalita or Kirip Chaliha is set to be fielded for the seat.
