MARGHERITA: A Legal Helpline Cell has fetched huge hope for the people of Margherita. Courtesy Legal Awareness Network Centre Margherita which opened up the venture on Monday.
Talking to www.assamtimes.org, the NGO officials said the main objective is to give free legal advice to the rural people in Margherita and its neighbouring areas.
The speakers in the opening ceremony hoped that the cell would be of immense benefit for the rural people. Papu Sah. President of Margherita Legal Awareness Network Centre urged the rural people to avail of legal advice whenever required.

The incident took place near Bordumsa where a group of armed rebels reached Anteswar Mahanta's residence at around 7 in the evening. Initially, they asked the Mahantas to open the door. Then they stormed into the house and dragged Anteswar Mahanta outside the house and sprayed several rounds of bullets from a point blank range. TINSUKIA: A villager died and his son sustained serious injury when suspected ULFA(I) attacked their house at a remote hamlet in Tinsukia district on Monday. The incident took place at 6.30 near Bordumsa in the evening when two gun men started indiscriminate firing at Anteswar Mahanta who was at his house premises. Moran died on the spot while his son who was flanked by him sustained serious injury and was rushed to the Assam Medical College Hospital where he is battling for life. Security forces have arrived in the spot and a massive man hunt is going on in search of the gunmen who fled after the attack.
MARGHERITA: A north eastern Bhojpuri peoples' organization has accused a section of people of collecting money from many Hindi speaking people in some pockets in Margherita from inclusion of their names in NRC. A delegation of the Purvottar Bhojpuri Sanmelan led by its president Prem Upadhyay who visited Ledo, Lekhapani, Jagun and the adjoining areas came to know rampant money collection in the name of All Assam Bhojpuri Parishad who are basically a bunch of Congress leaders. Upadhyay demands immediate action against these circle of so called Bhojpuri leaders for collection of cash for NRC.
TINSUKIA: Only a couple of weeks are left to publish NRC draft across the state. Tinsukia district authority is also gearing up to complete the NRC draft works in time. Those deployed in NRC works have been working overtime to meet the deadline. According to information, the officials have been doing door to door verification under the super vision of magistrate. The district authorities are fully prepared to submit 76,000 forms by December 20---ahead of the deadline to publish the draft. The recent Supreme Court instructions to accept panchayat certificates as supporting documents seems to have helped the NRC officials to expedite the process.
MARGHERITA: Prominent citizen and businessman in Margherita Abhay Paul passed away at a private hospital in Kolkata. Paul, who is associated with many local organizations died of cardiac arrest on Saturday leaving a pall of gloom in the entire locality. Many organizations and individuals have deeply condoled his death and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.
MARGHERITA: The Nagorik Surakhya Samity in Margherita on Friday staged a 10 hour hunger strike demanding immediate steps to repair the National Highway No 38 which has been languishing in dire strait for years. The leaders of the local organizations thronged the Borgolai Tiniali in the morning and started sitting on hunger strike for 10 hours. Talking to Assam Talks, Prakash Sarma and Amit Debnath said that despite repeated appeal the authority refused to act. "Now we think the democratic way us the hunger strike. Let's see what is in store" said Sarma. The vital road touches Borgolai, Segunbari and Tirap Colliary where a huge portion is almost non motorable.
MARGHERITA: The Police have detained more than a dozen illegal Bangladeshi settlers in Margherita on Thursday. Margherita unit of AJYCP leaders and activists who spotted them loitering on the bank of the river Burhidihing and after questioning them police men came and took them in detention. Talking to Assam Times, local AJYCP leaders said for the last several months they have been working at a nearby brick kiln staying in some huts. Now AJYCP workers are looking for some other settlers in the area. When police questioned them they have failed to give any convincing reply.
