Sir,

As citizens of this country we register our deep anxiety and distress at the proposed amendment of the Citizenship Act under consideration of the Joint Select Committee of Parliament. Whatever humanitarian consideration prompted the proposed amendment granting citizenship to persons belonging to minority communities namely Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, it is going to be highly inimical to the indigenous people of Assam and to the federal structure of the state.

At the moment, based on Assam Accord, at the intervention of the Supreme Court of India and on the instruction of the Central government, the Government of Assam is engaged in intensive updating of the National Register for Citizens (NRC) to include people permanently residing in the state till 24th March 1971 and to treat them alone as genuine citizens of the country.

The present attempt of the Central Government to extend citizenship beyond the cutoff date of 24th March, 1971 is not acceptable to the people of Assam. The state of Assam is already overburdened with high influx of foreign nationals from Bangladesh, causing serious economic and social distress and identity crisis for the indigenous communities of Assam. Under these circumstances, the proposed amendment poses an existential threat to the existing indigenous communities. 

In view of the above, we request you to withdraw the proposed amendment, or at the very least to exempt the state of Assam from the purview of the proposed amendment to the Citizenship Act.

Further, we request you to permit the people of Assam to submit their views in their own mother language in view of the fact that neither English nor Hindi is widely known among the indigenous communities of Assam.

COVID19 cases 20

Guwahati: The figure of COVID19 cases has reached 20 with 4 more people tested positive on Friday. According state health minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma, of these three from Nalbari while the remaining one is from North Salmara. He said that all patients who have travel history to Nizamuddin in Delhi are now stable.

New Delhi: UP police have caught 13 people from Assam in Moradabab who were hiding at a local mosque. Guwahati: More and more COVID 19 positive cases have been surfacing. Two more people have tested positive in Goal para with travel history to Delhi where they attended the religious congregation at Nizamuddin. Nizamuddin Impact: Four more test COVID19 positive

Guwahati: Four more people have tested COVID 19 positive at Guwahati Medical College Hospital on Wednesday taking figure of positive cases to 5. According to state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, GMCH laboratory has confirmed COVID19 positive in Jamaluddin Arshad Ali, Hazarat Ali, Nuruddin and Jonab Ali, who attended the religious function held at Nizamuddin in Delhi in mid March. Participators in Nizamuddin event must undergo test

Guwahati: The participating people in the religious function at the Nizamuddin shrine have been figured after the state confirmed the first one COVID19 patient undergoing treatment at the Silchar Medical College Hospital in Delhi. According to information, altogether 299 people attended the function along with 3000 others from the country and abroad on March 13 and 14. First COVID 19 case rattles state

Silchar: Finally,  the state confirmed it's first COVID19 patient with a travel history to Delhi where the cancer patient attended a religious function at Nizamuddin recently. The 55 year old patient from Karimganj was undergoing treatment of cancer at the Silchar Medical College for the last couple of days. Populist measures in the time of lockdown

Guwahati: In a bid to give some sort of respite in the time of nationwide lock down, the Assam government is launching a slew of schemes targeting 72 lakh families in the state. Presided over by CM Sarbananda Sonowal, the meeting resolved provide free rice for 58 lakh families under the National Food Security (NFS) Scheme  from Wednesday.
