In a big development in the state’s political arena, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma joined BJP.

The power former minister in the Tarun Gogoi cabinet formally joined the saffron party after his initial meeting with BJP president Amit Shah in New Delhi on Sunday.

Judges’ Field regained

At least 20 people have been injured in Biswanath in Sonitpur district on Wednesday when security forces sprang upon a group of protesters who blocked the road in protest against a road mishap that left one person injured.The incident took place at 3 in the afternoon at Borgang area where local residents in large number blocked the road for three hours a speeding vehicle knocked down a person. Gogoi ridicules Modi

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi seems to have sharpened attack on Narendra Modi hardly a week after his Gujarat counterpart slammed him alleging lack of development initiative.Even during the discussion on governor’s address on the floor of the Assembly on Wednesday, Gogoi claimed to have done much more than Modi.He said,” Assam's growth is 13% in 2012-13. But Gujarat is satisfied with only 8.52%. Only Modi only has speed of speech where I have speed of development.” Gogoi said that Modi came to Guwahati and said that we have given jobs to only 10,000 people which was not true.

5 killed in Dergaon mishap

Five persons of a family were killed at a tragic rad mishap in Dergaon sending shockwaves across the state on Wednesday.It took place at Balijan on the National Highway No 37 when a vehicle carrying five women and kid rammed into a tree at around 12 in the afternoon.Four women and the kid were killed on the spot. Three others are battling with life at the Jorhat Medical College Hospital after being shifted to it.Eyewitness told Assam Times that the driver of the speeding vehicle suddenly lost control over it and hit the tree.

Hazarika to move court

Stunned by suspension by the party alleging intentionally cancelling his vote in the Rajya Sabha polls, AGP legislator Padma Hazarika on Wednesday decided to move the court challenging the leadership.According to the Sotea MLA, he was made the victim of conspiracy within his own party. He would further challenge the cancelation of his ballot in the Rajya Sabha polls.

Come Thursday. Smokeless tobacco would not be available across the state. The Bill to ban sale, transport, display, consume and advertise smokeless tobacco will come into force.Governor JB Patnaik has given his consent to the much-hyped bill cleared by the House in the winter session.  The government is clearing the decks to strictly enforce the law after the legislation received ascent from the Governor.Days are not far when the government will bring yet another legislation to ban smoking tobacco to deal with the impending health hazard in the state.
