In a big development in the state’s political arena, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma joined BJP.

The power former minister in the Tarun Gogoi cabinet formally joined the saffron party after his initial meeting with BJP president Amit Shah in New Delhi on Sunday.

Steps on to ban smoking

The Bill to ban sale, transport, display, consume and advertise smokeless tobacco will come into force.Governor JB Patnaik has given his consent to the much-hyped bill cleared by the House in the winter session.  The government is clearing the decks to strictly enforce the law after the legislation received ascent from the Governor.Days are not far when the government will bring yet another legislation to ban smoking tobacco to deal with the impending health hazard in the state. This was what health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters in the Assam Assembly premises.

Anti-tobacco bill turns into law

The much-hyped anti-tobacco bill is all set to become a historic law in the state from Thursday.Disclosing this, health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma told the Assembly on Wednesday that the bill to ban sale and consumption of tobacco across the state has already got governor’s ascent.Now the bill is all set to become law from Thursday. The Assam Assembly will clear the formalities to ban sale and consumption of tobacco across the state.   

Trader escapes from captivity

A businessman managed to escape in Karbi Anglong district from the kidnappers two days after he was whisked away at gunpoint.Identified as Bijoy Das, the wine shop owner has reached his home at Rajapara on Wednesday wee hours giving a sign of relief to his family members and relatives.He is understood to have escaped from his captivity in Dhansila. He was kidnapped on Monday by a few gunmen forcing police to launch an intensive operation in the area.    

One horn terror in Koliabor

Rhino terror refuses to die down. A strayed rhino seems to have been unleashing terror in Kaliabor area on Wednesday a day after one person was killed in rhino attack in Majuli.Local villagers in Koliabor in the outskirt of the Kaziranga National park spotted the one horn animal at an open paddy field in Kuwalitul in the morning. They informed it to the forest department where officials arrived in the field to disperse the animal which could not sneak into the human habitat.    

Cong selects Guwahati candidate

Over 1000 Congress activists in Kamrup district are helping party high command select the candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from Guwahati.According to APCC, 1055 Congress workers are lined up in Dispur to vote in favour of their choice for the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency.From 9 in the morning on Wednesday, the party workers are making long queue in front of the booth at the Rudra Singha Sports Complex to select the candidate acting on the instruction of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.  Counting is expected to take place in the evening. HS Exam begins

Assam Higher secondary examination begins in science, arts and commerce streams on Wednesday.According to the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council over 2,54,000 candidates are appearing  this year in 792 centres across the state.The council has set up special committee in the district level to ensure free and fair examination.Over 2,000 officials have been deployed to deal with anomalies and irregularities. Barring a few anomalies, the examinations are going on peacefully.   The High School Leaving Certificate Examination is also scheduled to begin on Thursday.

Rahul rally on Feb 25
