In a big development in the state’s political arena, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma joined BJP.

The power former minister in the Tarun Gogoi cabinet formally joined the saffron party after his initial meeting with BJP president Amit Shah in New Delhi on Sunday.

Elephant terror revisits Demow

A hard of wild elephants has been unleashing a reign of terror in Demow during the last couple of days.One person was trampled to death by wild elephants on Friday night sending shock and anger against the forest department in the entire area.The incident took place at Chitolia where wild elephants trampled to death a local villagers Rajen Doley at night.Local residents told Assam Times that despite repeated appeal the forest department has done precious little to curb the menace.

BJP panel submits report

The BJP panel set up to probe the voting anomaly in the Rajya Sabha poll submitted its findings on Friday.Senior BJP leaders told Assam Times that the report was submitted before the state party president Sarbananda Sonowal for action against the legislator who intentionally got his vote cancelled. The panel is tightlipped on the findings.Led by senior leader Mison Ranjan Das, the three member panel grilled all the five legislators to fine out the truth behind the allegations. They include Parasanta Phukan, Ranjit Dutta, Jadav Deka, Manoranjan Das and Dilip Moran.

Assamese trader abducted in M’laya

Suspected GNLA militants kidnapped two businessmen from West Garo hills district in Meghalaya on Friday.According to information, four armed youths whisked the duo away from Gaattuli area on their way back from the market in the afternoon. Meghalaya police have launched rescue operations . But there is no trace of the businessmen hailing from Assam. Details are awaited.    

AIUDF names 2 candidates

The All India United Democratic Front on Friday has announced candidates for two seats for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Senior party leaders told Assam Times that Bijoy Krishna Nath will contest from Silchar seat while Radheshyam Biswas has been fielded in Karimganj seat.

Teacher accountability commission

Beware teachers. Dispur is contemplating a panel of experts to ensure accountability of teachers.Disclosing this education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters at a function Ravindra Bhawan that the government would soon set up teacher accountability commission to ascertain the penalty of erring teachers.The commission would comprise at least three former vice chancellors, said Dr Sarma.   

NE students detained in Delhi

Delhi police have detained at least 25 north eastern students when they staged dharna in Vijoy Chowk demanding justice for the Nido Tania, who was killed by goons in Lajpotnagar. The students, mostly, from Jawaharlal Nehru University suddenly staged blocked the road leading to the Rashtrapati Bhawan shouting slogans for justice to Nido Tania.Despite appeal, police resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the agitating students. At least 20 JNU students have been detained.

Union minister Ranee Narah on Friday good the taste of BJP protest in Dibrugarh a day after she accused Sarbananda Sonowal of accepting bribe for Rajya Sabha polls from DoNER minister Pawan Singh Ghatowar.Hundreds of BJP workers thronged the Dibrugarh Circuit House after she arrived in it in the morning. FIR against Padma Hazarika

Former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta’s daughter Prajaeta Kashyap has filed a complaint against Padma Hazarika charging the Sotea MLA with defaming her.In in the complaint she filed at the Panbazar Police Station against Hazarika, she accused the legislator of unnecessarily dragging her name in the Rajya Sabha voting anomalies when he was holding a talk show a private satellite news channel on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said that steps are on to firmly deal with the cases of racial attacks on the north eastern people in Delhi.During his meeting with Nido Tania’s parents in New Delhi on Friday, Dr Singh assured the bereaved family members that they would get justice and that they won’t allow these incidents to repeat further.He told Nido’s parents that his government would ensure exemplary punishment for the goons who killed the Arunachal Pradesh student. SC notice to NE states

The Supreme Court has directed the eight north eastern states to formulate common rules to deal with the cases of racial attack outside the region.Hearing a public interest litigation on Friday, a division bench of the apex court comprising chief justice of India and Justice Ranjan Gogoi asked the north eastern state governments to submit the rules to stop racial attack by the next 7 months.The PIL was filed in view of the growing cases of racial attack on the north eastern people in New Delhi along with some other states. Very recently, an Arunachal Pradesh Student was killed by the goons in Lajpotnagar in the capital.
