State’s duty to protect journos: Gogoi

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that protection of life of the working journalists is state’s responsibility and the government would do everything possible to ensure safety of the press people.

Inaugurating a national seminar on Freedom and Responsibility of Media and Social Security of the Journalists’ at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati on Monday, Gogoi said that no journalist should be compelled to write against his or her professional ethics and freedom should be given to him to decide his course of duties.

Stating that press in India enjoys more freedom than any other country in the world, Gogoi said that he wanted Majithia Wage Board recommendations to be followed in letter and spirit for the social and job security of the journalists. Lauding the role of the journalists in social transformation, Gogoi said that the journalists have always been a pillar in democracy.

He also said that democracy works because of the constructive role played by the press and called upon the journalists to indulge in constructive criticism for the society to progress.

Organised by the Journalists’ Association of Assam, a two day workshop for working journalists have also been conducted synchronizing with the occasion.

Earlier, Dhirendra Nath Chakraborty, President of Journalists’ Association of Assam gave the welcome address. Veteran scribes Prasanna Mohanti, Rajendranath Prabhu, Pragyanan Choudhury along with others also spoke on the occasion on the need of professional and social securities of the journalists.
